Liverpool have released a statement following violent attacks on supporters ahead of last night’s Champions League clash With Roma.

Footage showed ugly scenes outside of Anfield ahead of Liverpool’s 5-2 semi-final first leg victory.

Shocking videos shared on social media show a group of around 40 Roma fans attacking their counterparts, while witnesses claimed the Italians were using their belts as weapons.

The Premier League club confirmed a Reds fan is in critical condition following the violence.

And Liverpool were quick to confirm they are working alongside police to find the culprits.

Liverpool’s statement read:

“Liverpool Football Club is shocked and appalled after a Liverpool supporter was left in a critical condition having been attacked prior to the Champions League fixture against AS Roma.

“Our thoughts, in the first instance, are with the victim and his family at this very traumatic time. We will be offering them our full support.

“The club has been liaising with the emergency services since the incident occurred and will continue to do so.

“Liverpool FC directs supporters and those in attendance at the game to Merseyside Police’s appeal for information.”

Liverpool take a three-goal lead to the Italian capital next week after braces from Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.

Sadio Mane was also on the scoresheet before Roma bagged two late goals to give them a glimmer of hope.
