A clinical cardiologist is a doctor who specializes in diagnosis and treatment of patients with heart-related diseases and vascular problems. These may include heart attacks, stroke, coronary artery disease and related conditions.

Duties

Clinical cardiologists treat patients referred by the General Practitioners suspected of heart problems and related disease. These conditions include high blood pressure, heart and tissue inflammation, congenital conditions and irregular heartbeats. These are serious conditions which required different techniques of treatment such as recording heartbeats, surgeries or through inserting stents.

As a clinical cardiologist, you can either work in hospitals or private clinics. You may also work on on-call duties too. Sometimes, you may work in multiple hospitals requiring travel according to your workload. Your working hours may also be long and unpredictable including mornings, nights and weekends.

Educational Qualification and Skills

To become a cardiologist, you require a 5-year medical degree approved and certified by the GMC. There are 2 years foundation training and at least 4 more years of specialized training in cardiology.
