A lecturer at the Veritas University, Bwari, Abuja, has been reportedly kidnapped by gunmen who raided the institution on Monday, May 7, around 12am.

The Punch reported that abducted lecturer, Michael Kwanashie, is also a Catholic priest and serves as a personal assistant to the vice-chancellor of the university.

The newspaper stated that the lecturer lived in the same room with the school Chaplain, Aloysius Achonwa, who reportedly hid in the roof during the raid.

A student at the school who identified herself as Mbafan, said the gunmen are demanding N15m ransom as condition for releasing the lecturer.

“It was around 12am when we heard gunshots. Everyone froze in fear. It was in the morning we learnt that the attackers had abducted the priest and were demanding N15m ransom,” Mbafan said.

When contacted about the reported abduction, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police spokesman, Anjuguri Manzah, promised to find out from the Bwari police division, but he however failed to respond to calls and did not reply to a text message sent to him.

Meanwhile, the Kwara state government has promised a reward of N5m to anyone with information that will lead to the arrest of suspected Offa robbery gang.

The Nigerian Police in a statement on Monday, May 7, urged members of the public who have any information about the wanted suspects to contact the police through dedicated lines.

In a tweet, the police said the photographs of the wanted suspects had been released to the public for assistance to arrest them. It also stated that the suspects had being placed on INTERPOL watch list and red alert.

The force also assured Offa residents of their safety and vowed to arrest and prosecute the perpetrators of the robbery.
