This is most likely not as a result of spillage as said by the op. This bus drivers are very carefree and heartless. The driver must have hidden a keg of fuel somewhere around the bus should the fuel in the bus finish along the road instead of putting it into the bus tank.

Very stupid management Mentality. The way pipl get away with crime and certain offenses in dis country is just too much. Dat must be a hired bus and dat is what those drivers and conductors does. I had to alight from a bus wen I noticed a keg of fuel hidden somewhere in the bus. Very terrible people.

I have said this before - https://www.nairaland.com/4445534/heavy-rain-causes-terrible-accident/1#66598585. I will continue to maintain that avoidable accidents of this nature have less to do with Nigeria. It has everything to do with the recklessness of drivers and the docility passengers. Just because you're a passenger in a bus or other taxi types doesn't guarantee the driver will take you to your destination. I say this because most drivers on Nigerian roads are impaired from excessive smoking of hard drugs and drinking before entering the steering. Others are ignorant of the rules of the road while some are just plain idiots who think driving decisions don't have consequences.

Years ago, I almost got into a fight with a driver on Lagos-Benin road because he was driving recklessly and I wasn't going to sit there and allow the fool to toy with my life because he happens to control the steering at that time. Even now, anytime I happen to use public transportation for long-distance travel, I seem to always fuss with the driver, sometimes a greater portion of the commute time. Not that I'm difficult. But as a savvy road user, it irks me when taxi drivers drive recklessly without regard to the lives of the passengers.

When you board a taxi, your life is in the hands of the driver. If he's drunk or impaired from drugs and decides to speed unnecessarily or do anything with the vehicle, you're done. If you sit quiet and something bad happens, not only he that would be affected. You must tell the driver to stop the reckless behavior, ESPECIALLY THE EXCESSIVE AND, OFTEN, UNNECESSARY SPEEDING because it will only end up in a deadly crash.

More so, before you depart from the bus terminal, do a visual inspection of the vehicle. If the tire is bald and he doesn't care, you're toast. If the brakes in the vehicle are not serviced and the pads replaced regularly which is usually responsible for cases of brake failures, I'm afraid to say you likely won't get to your destination without a collision.

What I'm saying is that passengers should pay more attention to the condition of the vehicle and what drivers are doing. As a passenger, if you like sleeping while commuting, you're toying with your life. It is your duty as a passenger, not the driver's duty only, to ensure the vehicle takes you safely to your destination. Again, inspect the taxi before you board it. If you see something tell the driver. If he doesn't care, don't use his vehicle. Let the commute to your destination be a collective responsibility, instead of it being the driver's responsibility only.

It is time for Road Safety Agents to be posted to motor parks to conduct pre-inspection of vehicles and the drivers before public taxis depart from the terminals. Also, as matter of urgency the National Assembly/government should mandate that public taxis are inspected periodically at certified serviced centers to ensure the road-worthiness of public taxis.

May the souls of the victims of this avoidable accident rest in peace!

Really? Accidents are not peculiar to any geography/location or country. Just last week, A fatal accident involving a Tesla sedan occurred in the US and this sort of accident is no way rare in the US.
A lot of accidents here in Nigeria are highly preventable but that does not mean this 'evil' is peculiar to Nigeria. This is really sad.
