Roberto Mancini according to Sky in Italy has agreed a two-year deal in principle to become Italy’s head coach.

The former Inter Milan manager was billed to travel to the city of Rome to meet with the Italian FA chiefs with a view to finalise his contract having parted ways with Russian club Zenit St Petersburg on Sunday.

Mancini, 53 is said to have agreed to take a pay cut to secure the job, having already given up potential earnings of €13m (£11.5m) by agreeing a termination of his contract just a year into a three-year deal.

The Italian is set to sign a deal with Italy until the end of Euro 2020 that will see him earn around €2m (£1.8m) a year.
Mancini will converge with his team on May 22 at Italy’s Coverciano training centre to set up preparation for his first game in charge against Saudi Arabia in San Gallo on May 28.

The four-time World Cup winners failed to qualify for Russia 2018 as they were beaten by fellow Europeans Sweden in the play-offs.

Mancini’s appointment might see the return of Mario Balotelli to the national team, a player who played under the manager years back for Manchester City in the English Premier League.

The forward was omitted from the selection against Argentina and England earlier this year.
Italy will also play France in an international friendly prior to the World Cup in Nice on June 1 and take on Netherlands in Turin on June 4.
