The different amazing cultures and traditions in Africa makes the continent outstanding among other continents. However, many cultures in Africa are going into extinction due to civilization. But the Yoruba tribes never allowed civilization to take over their cultures and tradition. Despite the fact that they are the most educated people in the country, they still hold their culture tenaciously. So, this article will outline the things you don’t know about Yoruba culture.

There are many aspect of Yoruba culture that most people are unaware. In fact, an average Yoruba man is very passionate about his culture and will definitely inculcate it on his children. This is why even a Yoruba man that spends 20 years in Europe will still uphold his culture and tradition.

The Yoruba culture is one of the best in the country. Everything about this tribe is unique ranging from dressing, greetings and off food. They have mouth watering dishes and many more. Well, some of the things you don’t know about Yoruba Culture are;

#1 They Are Not Only in Nigeria

Perhaps you don’t know that Yoruba are not only in Nigeria. Also, they are in west Africa countries like Republic of Benin, Togo, Ghana and Ivory coast.

As a matter of fact, there are about 60 million Yoruba people. And they represent about 20 percent of Nigeria population. Interestingly, this figures makes them among the largest ethnic group in Africa.

#2 Yoruba People Still Practice Traditional Religion

Irrespective of civilization and religion orientation, most Yoruba people still practice traditional religion. In fact, till date there are several gods in Yoruba land but the three major ones are; Olorun (the sky god), Eshu ( the divine messenger) and Ogun ( the god of war).

However, other smaller villages worship deities like Obatala, Sango, Osun, Yemoja etc.


#3 They are Several Folktales and Philosophy Reign

Yoruba has several folktales and one of them is that the Garden of Eden is from Osun state. Most Yoruba folktales help people to navigate through life. In fact the tradition of the Yoruba people is based on folktales and philosophy.

#4 Babies Have Natural Birth Names

Every child in Yoruba land has a natural birth name. They attached serious important to name as they believe that a child destiny is intertwined with his name. This is why a typical Yoruba home with put a lot into consideration before naming a child.

#5 They Have Been In Existence From Time Immemorial

The Yorubas have been in existence from time immemorial. In fact, they have been in West Africa countries thousands of years before the emergence of Nigeria.

Furthermore, the Yoruba culture has been the primary culture of southern Nigeria since 11th century under the Ife and Oyo empires.
