Chelsea football club of London on Saturday clinched the English FA Cup by beating Manchester United by a solitary goal. The West London team were victorious courtesy of an Eden Hazard first half penalty. Chelsea began the game with an obviously defensive approach putting many players behind the ball to ensure Manchester United forwards had a difficult day in office. It was a well executed plan as Manchester United failed to register a single shot on target in the first half of the match. Chelsea on the other hand applied a counter attacking approach towards the game using Oliver Giroud to play as a target man and flick headers for Eden Hazard. It was on such an occasion that led to their first chance which earned them a penalty with Phil Jones struggling to catch up with the Belgian as he raced towards goal only to be brought down by a clumsy tackle . The United and England defender was fortunate not to see red as there were protests over the yellow card brandished after the penalty was given.
Manchester United dominated the midfield passing with Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic exchanging passes beautifully but not penetrative enough to worry Courtious in goal. Chelsea Manager Antonio Conte used an extremely defensive formation akin to his opposite number when facing the big teams but however as rusty as his team performed it was overshadowed by the fact that they ran out winners.
Ngolo Kante and Bakayoko were seen standing in front of the Chelsea back line all through the game with just a few moments of overlapping by the Chelsea fullback Marcos Alonso. Chelsea were well aware that the United front line were spinless in front of goal without not fully fit Romelu Lukaku who told Jose Mourinho he would not want to start the game.
In the second half the Red Devils came all out and got close to scoring on many occasions but fell short of luck.
United were counting on Marcus Rashford to belt one in but the youngster missed a glittering chance in the second half to draw level for his team as Courtious ensured the one goal was enough to see them win their 8th FA Cup.
It was rather unfortunate for manager Jose Mourinho that on a day his side came out to play in a non pragmatic way, he became a victim of his own brand of play.
Jose Mourinho has been fairly and unfairly criticized for his tactics and accused of making games boring but seeing his side loose to Chelsea the football Einsteins have rather turned hypocritical of his attacking approach and Antonio Conte's too defensive manner of winning the game. Conte is rather being called a genius at Mourinho's expense making a mockery of their earlier criticism of the Portuguese.
