The arc with those striking colours, yeah the rainbow; has a grand effect on humans whenever we see one.

I don’t know if it’s because of the reassurance it gives us of our existence on earth or just the beautiful colours on display.

As a child the sight of the rainbow, at least the few times I have been opportune to see one, always had a long-lasting impact on me.

It’s same with most people when it comes to colours in general. Our minds are programmed to respond to colour.

The nervous system requires input and the olfactory organ (the nose) was the most essential source of input in primitive times.

However, the eyes have become the primary source of all our experiences; research shows that approximately 80% of what we assimilate is visual.

Interestingly, the colours of the rainbow all have their own unique beauty, symbolize different things, including emotions.

RED – energizing, exciting, passion, wealth, importance, attention, irritation, provoke anger and danger.

ORANGE – warm, happy, optimism, friendship, adventure, good communication, enthusiasm, rejuvenation, courage, vitality, pride, tension and aggression

YELLOW – inquisitiveness, creativity, uplifting, hopeful, cheerful, fun, critical, judgmental and analytical

GREEN – renewal, growth, harmony, hope, nature, balance, prosperity and envy

BLUE – calming, peaceful, devotion, wisdom, loyalty, trust, caring, predictable, conservative, formal and rigid

INDIGO – infinity, intuition, integrity, idealism, introspection, judgment and intolerance

VIOLET– nobility, creativeness, selflessness, mystery, fantasy, spirituality, inspiration, cynicism, pompous behavior, and immaturity

People see colour before they absorb anything else. Research has shown that 60-92% of the time, people make assessments based on colour alone.

Colours are efficient in influencing moods and feelings (positively or negatively) as seen in the illustrations, and you know emotions are powerful in driving our decision making.

This is what many recognizable brands have put into use to pull their intended market.

Having a logo is good business but as a brand, you want to cultivate a strong emotional connection with your customers.

You can’t do that with just your logo. But your brand colours can create that connection to your clients’ hearts.

In fact, colour is one of the biggest factors that designers take into account when creating a logo.
