Hello nairalanders new to this forum just want to be sure of something does it really matter what grade you get during your masters level, i got 2:1 in my first degree though.
Re: How Important Is Masters Grade by Buzman: 12:45pm On Jun 01, 2010
I guess grades don't matter there, but what you take out of it yourself except you want to move on to PHD.

Is Masters even important? only important if you want to be a lecturer. It can be a problem for you if you want to work in any business environment because while others will be talking about practical business realities, you will be thinking about theories.

A masters degree is very important in America these days. I think its fair to conclude that a bachelors degree is equal to a high school diploma over here. In some states, you cant even be a teacher without getting a masters degree in education

Degree, Masters, PhD all depends on the college and the individual.
Harvard, Stamford, Cardiff, Oxford etc have created great deal of champions and just one department from each of these colleges have produced 5 times more Noble Laureates than the entire Africa combined. And there are several drop outs like Bill Gates, Steve Balmer, James Cameron, Steve Jobs, and Otedola who made university degree appear like a waste of time. The college can change you if its a reputable one unlike the grinding and annoying universities in Nigeria filled with sadists and unqualified lecturers who make church sermons appear a lot more educative. It all depends on you. How much of the education will reflect in your life.
Will the master just be an extraneous or independent variable that would pull in more comfort and nothing further.
So, if you are talking about getting more pay, your on the right path.

A Masters Degree is rated side by side with experience. Companies usually employ graduates with brief or no experience and a Masters Degree on the same grade level as graduates with five (5) years experience and no masters degree.  Employers are even known to be biased in favour of relevant experience over paper qualification, that's why the guys who've 'done it before' usually get the high profile responsibilities - companies wont risk giving a sensitive job/responsibility to a person to try out his book theories.

Not important at all

The posters said Masters Grade not degree.

Poster, it's a 50 - 50 thing, for example I hope to do an MBA at a top American school after the Master's i'm currently doing, so I'm hoping the grade (a distinction) would be in my favour,but if you're going to work after. . it's not very important, until about 5 years ago there wasn't even master's grade. it was either you passed or failed.

Hey,

So in your own 'practical' world, Masters is only about theory?

Re: How Important Is Masters Grade by melodytoda: 1:02pm On Jun 02, 2010
Masters is not all about theory.

But it also depends on the type of masters.

Like M.Sc is very academic
Re: How Important Is Masters Grade by Nobody: 1:07pm On Jun 02, 2010
Masters is an added advantage
Re: How Important Is Masters Grade by melodytoda: 1:12pm On Jun 02, 2010
Definitely.

we can therefore conclude that it is very important.

Any knowledge is yours forever. Certainly not to your disadvantage.

So dear poster, carry on.

sometimes when people sit and talk about theroies theories and theories, they make me laugh!! sad sad angry angry what then are THE FUNDAMENTALS of science if not theories?? TIMONSHENKO russian scientist and engineer spent a whole lot of time on analysis of thin plates and shells and his books are filled with complex analytical principles, however, he used his theories to develop and design RUSSIAN WARHEADS, SUBMARINES AND HIGH SPEED ROCKEST AND UNDERGROUND VESSELS THAT COULD WITHSTAND HIGH PRESSURES!! thats why he's regarded as the ENGINEER OF THE CENTURY!! tongue tongue SO what u refer to as theories are VERY PRACTICAL. . . take for example in structural analysis of foundations, we analyse forces not to be eccentric with the centroid of their bases its simply practical. . . if an okada man in lagos is driving and ur not sitting in such a way that the centroids of ur bodies coincide relatively with the centre line of the okada, the okada would be unstable and would OVERTURN due to OVERTURNING MOMENTS. . .thats when u hear the okada MAN saying " oga abeg sit properly" so people, EVERY scientific theory has its practical connotAtion. . . am a research and design personnel do am talking from experience, wink wink wink wink

The GRADE matters only if you intend going for your Phd
In the UK (I don't know about Nigeria), your grade doesn't appear on you certificate except you get a distinction.

While a Masters degree holder might not necesarily be better or more competent than a Bachelors degree holder, it is very advisable to go for Masters if the opportunity present itself.
If not for any other reason, we live in a very competitive world where there are so many applicants chasing very few jobs. So the employers always raise the recruitment standards just to drop so many applicants.Some companies now strictly target only Masters degree holders.
Even if you get a good job with your bachelors,your colleagues with a Masters degree may enjoy more rapid promotions than you,etc.
So ultimately, i think a Masters degree is very beneficial in the long run.

I graduated with a third class degree, and at the moment i've almost finished my PhD programme.

I respectfully disagree with everyone that said Grade doesn't count. @ Poster, Please go for it and get your distinction grin , It is very Important. What is worth doing atall is worth doing well. It will definitely give you the competitive edge in the Job market, . I graduated with a 1stclass degree Last year and by the grace of God, it helped me secure a decent Job down here, even as an Int'l Student. I'll definitely aim for Distinction when I go for masters. Please take the Classification seriously! get your distinction and see how your certificate and experience will begin to work for you

The university education is US is somehow too easy and fluffy in most cases due to their lack of specialisation in the subject studied.

In the UK, the MSc is at most times not differentiated from a BSc excepti one wants to do a Phd or work in research in industry in the subject area.
Re: How Important Is Masters Grade by Sagamite(m): 2:16pm On Jun 02, 2010
A master degree is good for those or if you want to gloss your profile by going to a better, more highly rated university.

I know that one either gets a pass or a distinction.

I personally believe Heriot Watt - EBS.
However University of Aberdeen is a top school and you might consider an MBA if you are somehow interested in the oil & gas or Energy industry.

Glasgow Caledonian is a new school and aren't as highly rated as the other 2 above.

Some schools do a grading system of;
Distinction;
Commendation;
Merit;
PAss;
FAil
