The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Monday said it has destroyed a 10-hectare Indian hemp farm at Area 5, Ife-South Local Government Area of Osun.

The State Commander of the agency, Mr Egbeola Samuel, said 19.3 kg of already harvested Indian hemp was also seized at the farm while one suspect was arrested.

Samuel, who said the command was set to destroy more Indian hemp farms, solicited the support of the state government

He, however, expressed gratitude to the state government for the support it rendered to the agency in carrying out its latest seizure.

The NDLEA boss also commended Mr Remi Kolajo, the Chairman of the Task force on Eradication of Planting, Distribution and Usage of Cannabis Sativa and Psychotropic Substances, for his supports.
Samuel said the NDLEA would not relent in its efforts to make Osun a drug-free state.

Destruction of 'weed' farms is bad for our environment. Giving the rise in the irreversible destruction of our ecosystem by plastic materials, derivatives from marijuana can be use to make eco-friendly packaging materials, writing papers, and so on. This would create economic opportunities for the countless number of unemployed youths.

Also, medical its been proven that habit of opioid addiction can be broken using clinical treatment involving marijuana. Opioid addiction is a major challenge today. Much more of a challenge than the dependent use of cannabis.

Nigeria should commission it own research and create it own drug law. We should stop going with the Western playbook that terms everything which elude its tax-chase as illegal while finding ways behind the screen to incorporate it into its tax regime.
