According to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, who stated this in a message to a summit organised by Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Enugu Chapter, in Enugu yesterday, represented by a director in the ministry, Dr. Salaudeen Jimoh, said substandard drugs pose serious security and health hazards.

According to him, those abusing drugs cannot be called criminals but those who sell and manufacture drugs beyond the recommended standard are the criminals.

“When a large number of people are now involved in substance abuse, the security of the state and the nation at large will be in trouble.

“The state of the nation will be in trouble, and the health of the nation will also be in trouble,” he said.

The minister said war against illicit drug and abuse should be a collective effort of all Nigerians because it could lead to social vices like kidnapping, armed robbery and cultism.

Besides, Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Enugu State, Mr. Anthony Ohanyere, expressed worry over abuse of not only illicit drugs, but also normal drugs.

Ohanyere noted that drugs, considered naturally to be useful to life and unavoidable in sustaining life, were now being combined to produce negative results.

He said the war against such vices was not government responsibility alone but a collective effort of all and sundry.

Also, the South-East Zonal Director of the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Mrs. Ojetokun Olajumoke, said substance abuse constituted social economic problems.

She said the agency had intensified efforts at making sure narcotics drugs were made available to only scientific and medical offices.

Meanwhile, the Registrar of PCN, Dr. N.A. Mohammed, represented by the Director, Planning and Research, Babashehu Ahmed, said the Federal Government in collaboration with the council set up a codeine control and other related matters committee.

Mohammed said the committee, which comprised agencies such as NAFDAC, NDLEA, UNODC, Ministry of Health and other stakeholders would find lasting solution and recommendations to substance abuse.

Ahmed said one of the recommendations of the committee was sensitisation, adding that Enugu State was the only state in Nigeria to have implemented such recommendation through the organisation of a roundtable discussion on substance abuse.

Before you condemn people’s choice of lifestyle

Countless number of times, I have seen people try to portray the likes of Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Aliko Dangote e.t.c as rich people who don’t live a flashy lifestyle just because they don’t wear “Gucci” and all other designers considered as “flashy/classy” being worn by Hushpuppi and all other celebrities. I can’t help but laugh at their ignorance.

Taking the owner of Facebook as an example, they say he “ordinary plain grey T-shirts” despite having a net worth of over 72 billion USD. Have you ever tried checking out how much each of the T-shirt costs? In case you’re not informed, each of them costs around $300-$400 and he has lots and lots and lots of them. There are even rumors he doesn’t wear a T-shirt twice. So you can imagine how wearing $2100-$2800 worth of “ordinary plain grey T-shirts” a week portrays you as being “simple”.

Do you even know he spent $100 million on buying two properties on Kauai Island in 2014 alone? He has several other properties which amounts to millions of dollars. Now is that still a “simple” life? Bill Gates owns a house that costs $123 million and he’s a “simple” man just because he doesn’t wear Gucci?

The fact that people spend money on what they wear doesn’t mean they don’t have investments/businesses. A person buys an iPhone X/Samsung S9 plus and the next thing people say is “He should have bought a land in Ibeju”, “Why didn’t he invest that money on cryptocurrency?”, “Oh, he is living a fake life. He should have invested the money on landed properties”. Do you know if the person in question has built two houses in Ibeju already? Do you know if he has a substantial amount of digital currencies? Do you even know if he doesn’t like the idea of doing business at all?

The point is, we all have different personalities and what entices or makes us happy are distinct from one another. We all have different mentalities. So, if man A decides to spend HIS money on clothing and fashion items, man B might decide to spend HIS on buying cars. Man C might decide to spend it on houses. This doesn’t mean man A is trying to be flashy or man C is a “simple” man. It all depends on what makes you happy.

Everyone is entitled to his/her own kind of lifestyle!

You don't need to warn manufacturers. Just keep going after them regardless of political, regional, religious, ethic sentiment as has always been the case. And of course shunning the ever tempting corruption. Finally, building a system that works for itself and not tying an institution to an individual. As the case of blessed memory Dr. Dora to NAFDAC. An agency that started working when she came in and immediately stopped working after her administration. Nigeria is also a dumping ground for all imported expired & substandard drugs.

Warn? Instead of the task force to clamp down on them, punish them & make them pay fines through their noses. undecided

We're talking about human lives being affected here for God's sake coz set rules & standards have been breached already.

Successive governments in Nigeria have always been lackadaisical anyway, so their handling of this development is not a surprise.

The government knows what to do to effectively check this menace of drug abuse but they would rather continue beating about the bush.

You have agencies like PCN, NAFDAC, CPC and all the rest whose duties are to regulate drug use, yet government would not fund these agencies but keep playing politics with them. Every day they keep boring us with tales of drug abuse, yet no political will to tighten your regulation nooses!

Let's watch and see how they'll play politics with the new drug distribution guidelines which they earlier told us would take effect from January, 2019.

Very unserious government!!!
