FACT-CHECK: DID MEXICANS CELEBRATING WORLD CUP WIN CAUSE AN EARTHQUAKE?
After Mexico scored a goal to defeat defending champions Germany in their opening World Cup match on Sunday, a tweet suggesting that celebrating fans had triggered an “artificial earthquake” in Mexico City went viral.

But according to experts, no such earthquake occurred.

What are we verifying?

“The earthquake detected in Mexico city was artificial in origin. Possibly caused by mass jumping during Mexico’s World Cup goal. At least two sensors in Mexico City detected it at 11:32,” said the tweet, by an institution calling itself SIMMSA — the Department of Seismology and Volcanology of the Institute for Geological and Atmospheric Research.

ARSENAL TARGET TORREIRA HAS LEFT FOR €30M, SAYS SAMPDORIA CHIEF
Lucas Torreira has edged closer to a reported move to Arsenal with Sampdoria president Massimo Ferrero announcing the Uruguay midfielder has left for €30million.

Torreira, who was a second-half substitute in Uruguay’s World Cup Group A opener against Egypt, would become the third signing under new Arsenal head coach Unai Emery following the arrival of Stephan Lichtsteiner and Bernd Leno at the Emirates Stadium.

The 22-year-old played 36 times for Sampdoria in 2017-18, scoring four goals as the club finished 10th in Serie A, and Ferrero picked him out when explaining how the club makes money by developing players.

WORLD CUP: NFF TO BAN SUPER EAGLES PLAYERS FROM SOCIAL MEDIA
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has moved to curtail the use of social media by Super Eagles players during the 2018 World Cup.

First vice-president of the federation, Seyi Akinwunmi, is concerned that it has become a source of distraction for the players.

Team officials at the Eagles’ base camp in Essentuki have been told to address the issue ahead of Friday’s crucial clash against Iceland.

UNAI EMERY HAILS BERND LENO AS GERMAN SEALS £19.2M ARSENAL TRANSFER
Arsenal manager, Unai Emery has expressed his delight at the signing of new goalkeeper, Bernd Leno from German side, Bayer Leverkusen.

Following weeks of speculation, the move was confirmed by Bayer Leverkusen and the Gunners on Tuesday evening.
