Prizes sometimes come from an endowment by a family, in honour of someone important to the community, alumnus/na or former staff.

I guess the amount is not what matters but being the winner. It looks good on CV, I know for a fact.

But there should be more prizes by wealthy people, academic societies, individuals with decent money to encourage students.
