A woman has convinced her husband to return to the prison, just 2 hours after he was released, when she realised he was mistakenly released before his due time.

James Rynerson’s wife was shocked to find him in the garage of the apartment complex she lives in, but quickly realised the error and drove him back to Mesa County Jail in Colorado.

The prison reportedly failed to check his wristband and the 38-year-old took advantage of the situation and collected the other man’s belongings before he walked out.

Mesa County sheriff’s deputies mistook him for inmate Marvin March, who had temporarily moved into Rynerson’s cell, while his was under construction.


The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel said Rynerson was in custody late last month at the Mesa County Jail on a $2,000 cash bond while awaiting prosecution on menacing, disorderly conduct and trespass charges.

Mesa County Sheriff’s Sergeant, Henry Stoffel, said that jail employees broke procedure when they failed to check Rynerson’s wristband and picture, and that an investigation is ongoing to determine whether jail policy around the housing list needs to be updated.

He credited Rynerson’s wife for making her husband turn himself in.

Mr. Rynerson is now facing a number of new charges, including escape, forgery and criminal impersonation and theft.
