Oscar Bonga Nomvete once said, “A life that is defined by excuses will become comfortable in defeat, it has settled for mediocrity and is destined for failure”

Living a life of excuses can have grim and lasting consequences if you ask me. Not only will excuses prevent you from reaching your full potential, achieving your goals, but they will also hold you back from recognizing opportunities, strengths, and skills you might have that could help you overcome your life’s problems.

The thing about excuses is when you give in to them; they become your new reality.

Why is it so? Simple, excuses are an easy way to blame an external circumstance or reason why things are not going the way you want them to.

This same condition is also seen in the Real estate industry with a lot of Nigerian Realtors, who give countless excuses as to why they are not successful or making sales as they ought to.

Now before we touch on why Realtors or better put, Real Estate agents give excuses for their in-capabilities, let’s take a look at some of the excuses people give generally which prevents them from being the best they can.

There are many reasons why people make excuses. In fact, everyone has a variety of reasons for making them. However, we mostly make excuses for the following key reasons: Fear of Failure, Fear of Embarrassment, Fear of Success, Fear of Change, Fear of Uncertainty, Fear of Responsibility, and Fear of Making Mistakes, Perceived lack of confidence or resources.

To stop making excuses successfully we must first look at removing all traces of fear. Fear traps and locks us away in the confines of our comfort zone. However, for the most part, fear is very much misunderstood. Our fears typically emerge due to a lack of understanding, information, resources, experience or perspective.

If you insistently make excuses, then you may very well give in to the following consequences: A lack of responsibility and growth, Self-made self-limiting beliefs, Continuous regrets and “what if” scenarios, A pessimistic outlook on life, Poor judgment when it comes to making critical decisions and so on, These consequences certainly don’t result in a very fulfilling lifestyle. In fact, they paralyze us and prevent forward movement in all areas of our lives.

Even though excuses differ from person-to-person, listed below are common excuse excuses we all tend to give:

EXCUSE 1 — I DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH TIME
There are 24hours in a day; you have the time, make out things. The excuse of not having time means you lack passion, focus, discipline and direction. Likewise, it suggests that your priorities are out of sorts and that you may be struggling to manage your time most efficiently. In fact, the causes for this excuse could be narrowed down to procrastination (procrastination is a thief of time)

When you catch yourself making this excuse especially when it is important, ask yourself:

How badly do I really want this?

The minute you can answer that question, then you have taken the step in the excuse of ‘’not having enough time’’.

EXCUSE 2 — I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO DO IT
Whenever the word ‘I do not know how to do it’ is spoken aloud, it means you lack self-confidence and believe in your ability to achieve whatever goal that has been set for you or you have set for yourself. In addition, it shows that you simply have not taken the time to practice, to learn, or to gain the experience or education necessary to understand what is needed to get the job done.

Simply LEARN how to do what you want to do by reading books, by gaining practical experience, by asking for help, etc. IT IS THAT EASY.

EXCUSE 3 — I AM AFRAID TO FAIL
When you make this excuse, it means you lack understanding, confidence, knowledge, and experience.

Anthony Robbins once said that fear is nothing more than “False Evidence Appearing Real.” It is our perception of fear that terrifies and prevents us from moving forward. It is important to persevere and resist the temptation to give in to your excuses. Commit yourself to gain the necessary knowledge, understanding, and experience, and you will slowly but surely develop the self-confidence you need to achieve your goals.

Do you find yourself making excuses when you do not perform? Forget the excuses and face reality. Excuses are the loser’s way out. They will mar your integrity and stunt your personal growth.

As harsh as that sounds, it’s probably not too far away from the truth. Sometimes we get so absorbed in making excuses about how things didn’t turn out the way we had expected, that we forget to focus on making the best of every situation — no matter what the outcome.

As a Real estate agent, you’re probably identifying yourself right now with some of the excuses mentioned above and this has no doubt stopped you from identifying potential ways by which you could have achieved your dreams by now.
