The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Winifred Oyo-Ita, has called on labour unions in the civil service to focus less on agitation for a salary increase.

She said they should rather be more concerned about how to improve the service.

The Director, Media and Public Relations, Office of the HOCSF, Olawunmi Ogunmosunle, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Thursday.

Ogunmosule quoted Oyo-Ita as speaking during a recent study tour embarked by the HOCSF, Heads of Service from states across the country as well as federal and states Permanent Secretaries.

The top government officials had visited some establishments in Singapore.

“The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation who expressed admiration for the performance ranking system of Singapore appealed to the various unions in the public /civil service to focus less on agitation for a salary increase but rather be more definitive and proactive on how to improve the service,” the statement read.

Oyo-Ita affirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to transforming the civil service.

This, she said, would be achieved through the introduction and implementation of innovative ideas that would move the service forward in line with global trend.

She said that was the only way the service could be dynamic to meet up with the challenges of the 21st Century.

Oyo-Ita said parts of the measures being put in place by the government to reposition the civil service included the creation of work improvement units in ministries.

“The units created in ministries will comprise groups of civil servants from the bottom–up who will be allowed self-expression on how to improve their work operations,” she said.

She assured all the stakeholders that civil servants would be given the enabling environment to develop innovative ideas that would transform the service to meet with global trends.

She noted that the success stories of the public/civil service of Malaysia and Singapore were possible because they had been able to move their thinking and actions away from the colonial ways of doing things.
