UNILAG Seeks Police Intervention In Tackling Sexual Harassment Saga by CodeTemplar: 6:34am On Jul 19, 2018
The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has threatened to involve the police to compel Miss Joy Nwanna, the victim in the alleged case of sexual harassment involving one of its lecturers to appear before the investigation committee and substantiate her allegations.Nwanna had accused a Professor of Linguistics at the institution’s Department of English, Prof. Segun Awonusi of sexually harassing her.
The vice chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe who disclosed this at a briefing gave the identity of the accuser as Miss Joy Nwanna, a former student of the English Department who was enrolled to 200 level through direct entry during 2012/2013 academic session and graduated in 2016.
Prof Ogundipe also appealed to the publisher of ‘Linda Ikeji Blog’, the website that published the semi-nude pictures of the accused to help the university in its investigative efforts by supplying relevant information in her disposal about the source of the news. Already, the vice chancellor said all efforts by the committee to reach Miss Nwanna has failed as all her contact phone numbers obtained from her records were not going through.
Ogundipe said the embattled lecturer had appeared twice before the five-man panel headed by a former Dean of the Faculty of Law, Prof. Chioma Agonmo and had replied his query in writing. He said; “The panel conducted its investigations and recently submitted its report. Preliminary findings showed that the allegation of sexual harassment was not substantiated by the alleged victim or any other person.
“The preliminary investigations have raised certain questions and issues that need to be investigated further. Investigations are ongoing. The university is making efforts to confirm the authenticity or otherwise of the pictures that were released. We also require Miss Joy Nwanna to come forward to substantiate the allegations.
“To this end, the press and general public are urged to assist the university by impressing it upon the alleged victim to come forward and substantiate her claim. An appeal is also made to Linda Ikeji to convince the victim to appear before the panel and state her side of the story. Ikeji as an alumnus of the university has the right to help in the investigation because the image of the institution is affected.”

It's good development that the University leadership is committed to investigating the allegations and not getting behind their Lecturer as it used to be the case. A good number of lecturers across Nigeria Tertiary Institutions are guilty of Sexual Harassment.

Prof. Ogundipe is a pious man who will not allow this kind of matter to go unpunished.

The lady should come forward so that all those useless lecturers in English department can be dealt with.

That department is very notorious for sexual harassment in Unilag. I personally led a protest during my tenure as a student leader in that school to lodged complain.

Victimize the victim. That's why rape victims don't bother to report most times. She gave evidence and supplied images yet you want to use police to harass her. Who does not know in naija that lecturers knack for marks?
Re: UNILAG Seeks Police Intervention In Tackling Sexual Harassment Saga by phase1: 11:51am On Jul 19, 2018
Please do not try to victimize the victim because she is not a member of the lecturers 'clique'?

Thank God for the social media. The end is coming for all these randy lecturers, who refuse to retire and always prey on female students.

I've warned many of my colleagues in the Academia to desist from sexual harrasment. If your name enters the social media for stuffs like this. Your integrity is ruined.

It will be difficult to get a job even you lose the one you have.

So now that's she's not coming forward, the lecturer should be sacked without getting fair hearing from both side or the lecturer should continue his randy act while every other thing return to status quo?

What is your suggestion please?

It is not impossible that the victim may have reliably gathered the direction of investigation.

She could have informants who may have told her that she would be intimidated when she shows up.

No be Naija we dey? Prof don dey do that thing tey tey.

Mr. Former commissioner.

If all the evidence she gave was said to be insufficient...testimony....witnesses...images....tell me what else is left?

There's sufficient evidence to convict him. But his collegues want to protect him. Or else why threaten to force a victim to come testify?

Don't you know they are traumatized anytime they dee thier tormentors in person?
