Across Nigeria, there are so many cases of human rights abuses suffered by people who have no one to fight for them. If only most of these abuses were addressed, Nigeria will be a much better place to live in. Last Saturday, July 21, 2018, a family in Warri was brutalized by their neighbors, to the point of being hospitalized, a situation which to this day, a week later, has not really changed.

A family were home on the said day when they had a little dispute with their neighbors over raising a water tank behind the house, when one of the neighbors, Michael Okodevu, the principal of Delight Academy at Orhunworun, Warri, Delta State, in the company of his siblings and some armed men, attacked the entire family – a man, his wife and their daughter, who happens to be a nursing mother!

According to a member of the victimized family, who was absent during the attack, the men beat the victims within an inch of their lives and even vandalized their house.

After which, the perpetrators went as far as using the Police Force officials in their immediate environment to further traumatize them, by locking the patriarch of the house up for some time, while still nursing his injuries, before he was taken to the hospital.

Now, the question is, what could have warranted such an attack in the first place? Why should these men attack a family after an exchange of words over erecting a tank in a public compound?

We complain everyday about abuses by government officials, but we oppress ourselves everyday over random stuff.

At least, that is proof that no one is running a smear campaign against them. Thank you.
