Microsoft outlook is Microsoft's own email client and personal information manager which is a part of the Microsoft office suite. It can function as a standalone application but most often in Cooperate organisations, it is used with an exchange server and Microsoft Sharepoint server for multiple users.

When an account is created for a user on Microsoft Exchange, a copy of the user's data is stored in a .OST file (offline storage table), this enables the user to view his/her data when they are offline . However any change made during this offline period will not be reflected since there is no connection with the Exchange server.

It is standard practice in most organisations to allocate email storage quota for every user on the Exchange server, so there is the tendency of users getting their mailboxes filled up and when this happens such users will not be able to receive new mails or even send out mails. This can be remedied by a process called Archiving which also means creating a .PST file (Personal storage table) the idea is to move out the mails from the Exchange server to the user's local computer thus freeing up space on the server this in turn will enable the user to start receiving and sending mails again. Nice right, but the problem therein is that as the PST file gets bigger (2 GB and above), they become prone to corruption when this happens it becomes impossible to open the file. The good news however, is that Microsoft has an inbuilt repair tool for such scenarios. lets find out how:

The process of repairing a .PST file is a relatively simple one, depending on your version of Microsoft outlook,

Step 1: locate the SCANPST.EXE tool

on outlook 2003: go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\scanpst.exe

on outlook 2007: go to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\scanpst.exe

on outlook 2010: go to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\scanpst.exe

on outlook 2013: go to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15\scanpst.exe

on outlook 2016: go to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16\scanpst.exe

Note : if you are using a 64 bit operating system then proceed from the Program Files (x86) folder.

Step 2: after locating the SCANPST.EXE tool, double click on it.

Step 3: on the Microsoft outlook inbox repair tool dialogue, click on the browse button and move to where you stored the .PST file then click on the Start button to initialize the process.

Step 4: after scanning the .PST file a report will be displayed of all the necessary information obtained during the scanning process. Ensure you click on the make backup of scanned file before repairing option. then click on the Repair button.

Step 5: Wait for the process to complete successfully, then go to where you have stored your file and import it again into outlook. Hopefully, this should get the issue fixed.

I have tried this method severally with a 100% success rate till date.
