Nguru is a town located in Nguru local government area,Yobe State of about 916 square kilometres, North-east Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town. Nguru LGA is made up of several towns and villages which are mostly populated by members of ethnic divisions such as the Kanuri, Bedde, and Manga with average population about 150,632 at the 2006 census. The Kanuri and Hausa are most common spoken languages in the LGA while the religion of Islam is widely practiced in the area. Nguru is also a part of the Nguru Emirate and has a number of water bodies such as the Nguru Lake and the Hadejia and Nguru Rivers. The popular Hadejia-Nguru wetlands are also found in Nguru LGA while some parts of the LGA are characterized by sand dunes and have arid and desert-like features.
Farming is a basic economic activity among Nguru people with the area known for the cultivation of a number of crops such as millet, sorghum, groundnut, cotton, and cowpea for both subsistence and commercial purposes. The making and sales of hides and skin is also a critical aspect of the economy of Nguru town that is common among them. Other important economic activities in Nguru town include trade, fishing and leather works. Irrigation farming is most common and consistent methods of farming in Nguru
Groundnut is grown virtually all over the local government in commercial quantity. The wide plains of the land, with suitable annual rainfall and a sandy soil, make cultivation easy. Nguru is a major collecting and railing center and the establishment of Nguru Oil Mills in the sixties, testifies to the abundance of groundnut in the state. While, the rail line extension from Kano to Nguru was primarily because of the exploitation of groundnut business in the area. Gum Arabic of high grade is also available in commercial quantities in Nguru, where Nguru produces over 80 per cent of the total output of gum Arabic in the local areas. However, most of the Gum Arabic is exported for commercial purposes.Continue reading
