Does The VIN Report Really Count? by wemoveautos(m): 2:13pm On Sep 28, 2018
While many people believe that getting a VIN report is the ultimate before buying a car.
VIN report does not report the state of a car.VIN report only shows service record, accidents, recalls and registration information.
VIN reports does not state anything about the car's engine problems, transmission problems , electrical problems etc.
The best way to buy any car is through test driving and inspection.
Order an inspection before buying stop paying for a VIN report !!

There are 2 major sides to consider when purchasing a used vehicle:

- History:

Best assessed by VIN checks and Vehicle History Reports.

- Present condition:

Best assessed by expert and thorough physical inspection.

The history is just as important as the present condition, and one should not be considered without the other. They work hand-in-hand to create a complete picture of the state of a vehicle.

When a CarFax report states that a vehicle was routinely serviced and lists the consecutive dates of oil change, brake service, transmission repairs or work, airbag repair or work, suspension service or repairs, or that some electrical service or repairs were performed, that clearly contributes a great deal to the present state of the car.

Relying on just the VIN report or just the inspection alone would likely lead to an incomplete impression of the state of the vehicle.

Consider

A buyer looking for a vehicle contacts dealers who have about 5 models of the vehicle in their stock.

A

The dealers send the VIN for all 5 vehicles to the buyer who runs VIN checks and does some research for all 5 using the VIN, before visiting the dealers premises to see the vehicles and arrange inspection for 2 or 3 based on the information available from the VIN reports. In this case the VIN report acts as a screening method.

B

The buyer spends more time, money and logistics to arrange inspections with no VIN report beforehand for all the vehicles, which has to be done for all of them to decide which vehicles are in the best condition.

A would definitely be less expensive, more effective and lead to the client purchasing a vehicle in better condition.

Consider again

The VIN check reveals that 1 of the vehicles was flooded, 2 were in accidents involving the airbags, while 2 were clean titles with fair mileage and no other negative history.

Instead of the client to pay an expert for inspection for 5 vehicles, he may pay for 2 or 3, based on the VIN reports. It's not a 100% approach, but it is much more likely to lead to a good purchase.

For flood/water cases, which even some "expert" inspection may not detect, a good way to establish that would be a VIN report.

In some situations it may not be possible to get a VIN check for a car, e.g. cars from some parts of the world. In such cases the buyer has no option but to rely on the inspection alone.

To conclude, both approaches are necessary to achieve the aim of making a good vehicle purchase, and a VIN report before inspection actually increases the effectiveness of the inspection.

CarGuideNG provides buyers with customized or standard VIN or history reports. We also always encourage ALL clients to have any vehicles inspected by an expert before purchase.

Knowing the history of a used car before you decide to buy one can save you a lot of money down the road. By ordering a vehicle history report (VHR), you can remove most of the guesswork to determine if a used car has been involved in accidents or had major repairs
Computerglobal provides comprehensive vehicle history report for any used and tokunbo vehicles

When it comes to finding information about your future auto purchases, living in the digital age definitely has its advantages. Within the past 15 years, multiple companies have been introduced to the online community with the sole purpose of giving the consumer more buying power when looking to purchase a used car

. Since every car’s VIN is unique, these companies are able to use the VIN to establish and keep track of each car’s history. A typical report should consist of the following: how many owners the car has been titled to, if the vehicle has ever been involved in any accidents, any major repairs, dates of previous inspections and/or emissions tests, dates of services, and finally there should be approximate mileage listings.

You cant know the state of a car's engine with VIN reports.
I do my oil change and recommended maintenance at home. This wont be in the history of the car.
And more so the information provided to Carfax etc are from third parties which which are not obligated to report any.
I have a car with 65k miles with a failed transmission.I have rebuilt the transmission and will be sold at an auction but you will never see that on the VIN report.

VIN reports have been commonplace since the 1990s in the USA and Canada, where most vehicles are imported to Nigeria from. Today no smart used car buyer would buy a car without a VIN or history report in the USA or Canada, even most dealers already have the reports at hand for any prospective customers, hence the popular jingle "Show me the CarFax!".

Relying on just the VIN or just the inspection alone would likely lead to an incomplete impression of the state of the vehicle.

The information helps to give a better idea of the condition of the vehicle.

They are not exhaustive, and both AutoCheck and CarFax state clearly in each report that they do not contain all the information about the history of any car.

Both agencies also recommend independent expert examination of any vehicle, in addition to the history report.

However, history information is very helpful in assessing the condition of any car.

Another perspective is used engine purchase.

If you went to Ladipo for instance to buy an engine, would you simply rely on physical inspection, or would you also run a VIN report on the VIN affixed to the engine for a better idea of the history and the mileage?

When considering a vehicle or engine for purchase, failure to get a VIN report where applicable is an unfortunate error. One should have as much information as possible to make the best choices.
