9 Facts You Need To Know About Your Car VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) by autojosh: 6:44pm On Oct 05, 2018

Sometime ago, we wrote an article about 22 Car Parts That Are Related To The Human Body and one of the points listed is that the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is similar to the human fingerprints. You can use the VIN of a car to run a history report just like the fingerprint is used for biometrics. The VIN is a unique code which is assigned to each vehicle by the manufacturer. It comprises of 17 characters (digits and capital letters) which is used to uniquely identify each vehicle.

These are 9 facts you need to know about the VIN of your car.

1. They all have exactly 17 characters

2. You can only do a VIN check for vehicles manufactured after 1980.

3. Each character in the VIN of your car has a meaning as seen in the image above e.g. The 10th character represents the year of the car.

4. The VIN of your car will never contain letters I, O, or Q. This is to ensure the letters are not misrepresented as One (1) and Zero (0).

5. It will tell you the history of your car when you use it to carry out a Vehicle History Check e.g previous accidents, flood, recalls, theft etc. Some companies have also started collating vehicle history data in Nigeria.

6. Don't rely solely on the information you get from a VIN report. The VIN of the vehicle may have been altered or a vital issue may not have been reported. Therefore, you need to carryout other checks like visual inspection, test drives etc.

7. It is a unique code which means each car has a separate VIN except the VIN has been cloned or in the case of Audi which erroneously
manufactured over a thousand cars with the same VIN.

8. The VIN report information are gathered from traffic registers, municipalities, workshops, car dealers, insurance companies, police reports, reports from owners etc.

9. It can be found in several locations in your car e.g. Under the wiper embossed in the windshield, by the door latch on the "B" pillar, in the engine bay, rear tyre well, in the vehicle papers  etc.

What else do you know about the VIN of your car? Tell us in the comment section and don't forget to like, rate and share.

Great topic.

We specialise in providing Comprehensive Vehicle History Reports

A significant proportion of vehicles imported to Nigeria are salvaged and have all sorts of dangerous damage, it would be very short sighted and a serious error to purchase any vehicle without a VIN history report. CarGuideNG provides that service.

In conjunction with expert vehicle inspection, the aim is to have a comprehensive idea of the past and present condition of any vehicle.

The reports are inexpensive and well worth it, compared to the value of the vehicle and the potential dangerous history the report would protect a buyer from, such as accidents and collisions, flood or water damage, fire or severe heat damage, vandalism, mileage tampering or odometer rollback, and a lot more.

*Technically some vehicles have VIN less than 17 digits, and it's also possible to run a VIN check for some vehicles manufactured before 1980, for instance the 1966 Ford Mustang featured in the other independence day drive topic has 6R07T130262 as the 11 digit VIN.

Most average or regular history platforms would be unable to process it because it's less than 17 digits and it's beyond the scope of history databases like CarFax, AutoCheck and other European vehicle reports, or Middle Eastern vehicle reports.

With the right tools however it's possible to decode it to determine the location and year of manufacture, body configuration, engine and transmission type, and other specifications.

With the right specialized tools and sources it's also possible to gain history records for it.

For such vehicles it goes beyond the regular generic CarFax or AutoCheck or scanty European vehicle history reports average consumers and other average history platforms are familiar with.

wehdon Sir

A VIN, or Vehicle Identification Number, is a unique "fingerprint" assigned to a vehicle to allow it to be identified. All vehicles currently made in quantities over 500 are required to have a VIN number assigned to them.

Everyone from parts manufacturers to law enforcement use VIN numbers to trace, track, and positively identify vehicles. Each modern vehicle has the VIN number printed in several places on the vehicle, including on the frame. This allows identification even in the case of severe damage from accident or fire

Vehicle history reports provides information about used cars/tokunbo cars

Knowing the history of a used car or a tokunbo car before you decide to buy one can save you a lot of money down the road

Run a vin check and verify critical facts you need to buy a used car with confidence. check the title status, previous odometer readings, flood, airbag deployment, stolen, hail, biohazard and more.

Another great use of Vin is the BVIP

The Basic Vehicle Information package consists of the following:
• VIN check & analyze - Entered VIN, Entered VIN, WMI, VDS, VIS Identifier, Year, Year Info, Check Digit
• Manufacturer - Manufacturer name, Address, Region, Country, Note
• Vehicle Details - Make, Model, Versions, Series, Seats, Doors, Body Style, Vehicle Class, Vehicle Type, Build Year, Model Year/s, Plant, Country
• Technical Information - Engine Configuration, Engine Type, Engine Version, Valve operation, Valves, Cylinders, Engine HorsePower, Engine KiloWatts, Fuel Type, Emission Standard, Displacement SI, Displacement CID, Displacement Nominal, Driveline, Steering, Transmission, Gears, Vehicle codes ,report and more .
This can only be achieved by using the Vin or license plate through BVIP

Vehicle History Service Providers For American vehicles
Carfax
Autocheck
NMVTIS

European Vehicle History for European Vehicles

Knowledge is power when it comes to buying a vehicle

Ask for vin
Get A Comprehensive vehicle report
Hire a third party vehicle inspector
Purchase a market guide report
Verify custom duty (9ja buyers) grin

Baba cosplay well done oh. Your work will not go unnoticed.

Per this thread, It is an informative one. Nigerian car sellers will never give you VIN except you demand for it as most of their cars are accidented.

Hello Sir.

This is a common location to find the VIN on your vehicle.

When you have the VIN you can forward it to a history platform, we provide that service.

vin report is useful as a pre purchase check when the vehicle is at the dealer, but its useless when the vehicle has stayed in the country for more than a year or was locally used,we all know that our shady dealers and car owners in naija put for sale stickets on their vehicles yet drive them everyday, how do you rely on vin report for that?

Hello Sir.

You have a point, the reports are most useful as a vital tool while planning purchasing imported vehicles

However they are still necessary even for Nigerian used or even registered vehicles.

For instance, in the situation you mentioned, where a salesman tries to sell a used car as Tokunbo, the report would indicate when the vehicle was imported to Nigeria.

From that it may be possible to deduce the chances of being used or Tokunbo.

Further for such damage as flood or water damage where the irreversible process can start even years after import, the VIN report would be necessary even for a Nigerian used vehicle.

We recommend a combination of VIN reports as well as inspection for all vehicle purchases.

No Sir, it's not just dealers.

U.S. motor vehicle agencies

Canadian provincial motor vehicle agencies

Auto auctions

Collision repair facilities

Service/ maintenance facilities

Insurance companies

Salvage auctions

Automotive recyclers

Rental/fleet vehicle companies

State inspection stations

Extended warranty companies

Fire departments

Manufacturers

Law enforcement agencies

Car dealerships

Import/export companies

The information is sourced from several federal and state institutions, which is why the reports are often very comprehensive and detailed.

i know the authorities overseas use vin reports, i am talking about nigrria, who uses vin report? do our police or frsc know what a vin number is, do licensing offices have a system of keeping track of it? the answer is NO.

nigeria is one of the few countries in the world where a vehicle can have somany license plates with different owners.

With the prevailing economic circumstances in the country there is chances of cars staying in a car lot for close to a year without being sold, especially cars worth 2m and above.

You are very correct, VIN is useless in Nigeria for cars locally used, but necessary when buying imported cars though many dealers alter their cars' VIN especially car mileage.
Buying clean title cars is the best though they are more expensive but worth the extra cost.

You're right about that Sir, it's merely an approximate.

Expert physical inspection in addition to the report would be preferable.

Clean title cars are often in the best condition, and as such are often more expensive than the salvaged versions.

However the reports are not useless in Nigeria.

The VIN will reveal the true mileage of any vehicle, even if it was altered or rolled back.

Another often overlooked area where the reports are highly necessary is buying replacement engines for vehicles.

For such engines the only way to know the precise mileage and rule out flood or water or other forms of damage as well as to know the service history, is to get a comprehensive VIN Report.

I think Nigerian car dealers should be more open and honest with their dealings by making the VIN available to prospective buyers to know the history of what they are paying for, even if the car is an accident car buyers have the right to know the extent of the damage.
