There is an increasing amount of people who are turning to the web for their online education in hopes of receiving additional training or a higher level degree. However, the flexibility of online distance education also brings its own set of potential problems as the conventional education setting is not taking place. The first step and of utmost importance is to get a routine set in place. Distance education learning is all about pacing the work, there is typically there is an abundant amount of reading, projects due, online group activities and possibly even a thesis. Although with distance education, it would seem easy to wait until the last minute and turn all assignments and projects in, this is typically not the case. Most distance education programs have due dates and deadlines and to keep ones sanity, turning all assignments in at the last minute is not recommended. Getting a daily routine in place where time is set aside to study, work on assignments and to read will make distance education much easier to manage.

The next step is to make sure you are prepared at home with all materials and equipment needed to be as successful as possible in your distance education program. A home computer with an internet connection is most helpful, although many public libraries do offer free internet access and it is possible to do an online program offsite, it will definitely put time constraints on your online education. You may need multiple programs installed on your computer such as Microsoft Word or Powerpoint, checking with your online education instructor before the education program starts as to what programs are needed will help you be more prepared. I would also recommend purchasing a USB drive, it is easy to store your work on the drive and the best part is your work becomes portable.

Next, make sure to be highly organized and invest in a calendar or planner where you can document all due dates of projects and assignments. Many people feel that this step is not important or takes too much time but looking at the entire scope of things, a calendar or planner can really make online education and life much more easier to manage.

Another important step is making frequent contact with your instructors; since there is no face to face contact it is easy to have infrequent communication. However, even though distance education makes human contact difficult, it is still possible to build a relationship through the internet and it is very important to have some type of rapport with your online education instructors.

Last, although it may be difficult to get to know your peers in your online education program, if it is possible I would highly recommend trying to make the connections with the other students. It is so helpful when there is an issue or question about an assignment or project and you are able to ask someone that is going through the same process as you. Some of the greatest help I have received has come from my peers and without them, the online education program would have been so much more difficult.
