If you think applying and obtaining your Visa to travel abroad is difficult, wait until you apply for your academic transcript from a typical Nigerian tertiary institution.

You will suffer more than Job in the Bible.

First, you'd be made to donate to the school, through their specialised internal revenue generation mechanism. Here, they'd ask you to provide receipts for some unbelievable stuff, including receipts for documents which you already posses the original copies. Sometimes they can even ask for your father's birth certificate (pun intended). You either pay or provide the required receipts, or you bid your application a sad goodbye.

If you manage to survive this first hurdle, you'd need grace, patience and sometimes a deep pocket to survive the next. For the next hurdle, your are faced with the regular bureaucracy and bottleneck of a typical Nigeria civil service office. Where you are required to know someone who knows someone, or be ready to part with some few naira notes, before you are attended to. It has become a sad story, that has continued unabated in our tertiary institutions.

Some of these staff will keep your files and documents unattended for no just cause, except to show you that they are the boss; regaling you with their idiotic line of "you cannot teach me my job". Others will leave their offices for days, taking the keys with them so no one can act in their stead, and yet nothing is ever done to such character to deter such rascality and irresponsibility. Come tomorrow is often the only response they give when questioned.

Many applicants are left to the mercy of some of these guys, who care less about the import anything except their salaries. And their careless attitude and acute lack of professionalism have cost countless number of people their admissions, scholarships and even jobs, yet the sad tale is still the same.

I often wonder why some of these schools cannot have the results of their graduating and graduated students, prepared and stored somewhere for easy retrieval; so that if and when such is requested for, it can be obtained with the least fuss. Yet we have computer sciences departments and ICT arms in almost every tertiary institution across Nigeria. An epic irony indeed.

Or do they salivate and enjoy seeing the people, their own people go through these insane stress just to have their academic transcript sent to them or their schools of choice?

Maybe they do.

For no explanation will suffice for such incredulous irresponsibility.

I tire.

I think this menace is peculiar to most public universities in Nigeria. Once you know the boss in charge or the staff that processes it, your transcript can be ready in few days without bribing.
