The popular adage “the grass is always greener at the other side of the fence” can be likened to the scenario of those people looking for a greener pastures in foreign countries. They believed everything is well with these host countries, thereby employing every means to go to these countries. This means which is always illegal and it is generally known as ILLEGAL MIGRATION.

Illegal migration, according to Wikipedia is the migration of people into a country in ways that violate the immigration laws of that country, or the remaining in a country of people who no longer have the legal right to remain.

THE EXPERIENCE OF MIGRATION

These people who are generally known as illegal migrants or undocumented migrants or as recently used in the United States, illegal aliens are people who usually come from poorer countries or a war infested country.

They go to these countries for protection or to look for more paying jobs.

These people, with the help of human traffickers use unscrupulous and dangerous means to go to these foreign countries. People from sub Saharan Africa usually brave the desert and Mediterranean to go to Europe.

Thousands of these illegal migrants has reportedly died in the Sahara desert and the Mediterranean sea while going to Europe.

Most of the people who are said to be Nigerians suffered untold hardship in the hands of human traffickers and some are even stuck in Libya where most are incarcerated, some are sold to slavery and even killed.

The Nigeria government claimed to have repatriated more than 9000 Nigerians from Libya this year alone and its still believed that many Nigerians are still languishing in underground cells in Libya where they suffer inhuman treatment.

There is no improvement in their situation upon reaching their destination. The people and the government of these host countries always forget that these people are human who are protected by the universal human right.

Recently, the US President, Donald Trump said the stones thrown by illegal immigrants to security operatives might be likened to a rifle, so the security operatives might likely shoot the immigrants if they are thrown stones.

WHAT THEY FINALLY DISCOVER

Upon getting to their destination these illegal immigrants will discover that there is no high paying job because they need documents which they do not have to procure these jobs.

Some who managed to secure a job are payed a more lower rate than the normal salary rate of the host countries.

Some are even forced in uncomfortable, uncondusive, unsafe or even inhuman working conditions. Some of the young girls who usually take up a maid or house help job are usually starved, beaten and raped by their employers.

Recently, two Nigerian maids were allegedly killed by their employers in Saudi Arabia, making another to feigned madness so, that she could be sent home.

These undocumented migrants usually have little or no access to public health systems, proper housing, education and banks . Some immigrants are even forced into slavery or prostitution.

Some were not even able to stay in these host countries because they are deported as soon as they are discovered by the governments of these host countries.

It was in the news earlier this week that Canada will be deporting asylum seekers from Nigeria since Nigeria is not perceived as a country where political persecution is ongoing.
