The Super Falcons of Nigeria take on the Banyana Banyana of South Africa at the Cape Coast Stadium in their first game of the 2018 Nations in Ghana. The match will be played at 4:30pm on Sunday, November 18th, 2018.

The two teams met in the semi-finals of the past two Nations Cup tournaments. Nigeria defeated South Africa 2-1 at the 2014 Nations Cup in Namibia courtesy of two goals by Asisat Oshoala. South Africa’s consolation goal was scored by Refiloe Jane.

A single goal separated the two teams in the semi-final of the 2016 Nations Cup in Cameroon as Desire Oparanozie’s thunderous free kick sent Nigeria to the final of AWCON 2016.

Oparanozie Wary Of South Africa’s AWCON Threat

by Sam O.
— November 11, 2018
in National Teams

France-based female striker, Desire Oparanozie has shot a look ahead of Nigeria’s first match at this year’s Africa Women Cup of Nations in Ghana, and says their opponents, South Africa, are a good side the need to be wary of.

Although Oparanozie believes Nigeria will scale the hurdle when both sides clash next Sunday in Cape Cost, Ghana, sports247.ng learnt she admits the Falcons cannot afford to take Banyana Banyana for granted.

Rather than be overconfident heading into their ripening Group B fixture, the Guingamp of France star says the Falcons must be wary of their opponents in order to get a good start to the continental soccer showpiece.

Nonetheless, Oparanozie is also rating the Falcons high, as she believes they have what other teams in Africa lack, which she believes would be a plus for them at AWCON 2018 in Ghana.

The 24-year-old striker said she is happy that the Falcons enjoy a cordial team spirit that makes life easier for them on and off the pitch, and should help them win the tournament.

“We live as a unit. There is that bond between us and we are all thinking less about ourselves and thinking more about our common goal which is an 11th title.

“People tend to see Nigeria as top favourites (but) I personally don’t think so. You have to prove it on the pitch and not on paper and not ahead of the tournament.

“South Africa are a good side. Don’t forget they have been finalists four times. Equatorial Guinea are back. They won the title in 2008 and in 2012.

“Zambia have greatly improved. Qualifying from the group would not be easy for any of the four teams. It’s going to be a battle. Nigeria have defeated host teams before.

“Although there would likely be huge home support for the Black Queens due to the popularity of female football in Ghana, we have gone past that. We will focus on our play.”

BANYANA SET FOR WAR WITH SUPER FALCONS

By MATHEWS MPETE
Tuesday, November 13, 2018 11:52

BANYANA Banyana's fierce rivals Nigeria are expected to depart for Ghana on Wednesday for their Women's Africa Cup of Nations tournament to be held in the West African country from Saturday to 1 December.

Desiree Ellis' side, the reigning South African Team of the Year, will open their tournament account against the Super Falcons of Nigeria who would be hoping to defend the title they won last year.

But Ellis has made it clear that they will not anybody to walk all over them, and they will fight to win Group B where they are circled with Chipolopolo Queens of Zambia and Equatorial Guinea.

The Equatorial Guinea team managed to dribble their way back to the tournament following a CAF Appeal panel ruling.

The central Africans were initially banned from taking part in the tournament following a protest by Kenya who alleged that they used an ineligible player in Annette Jacky Messomo following their 3-2 win over the Kenyans.

But the Caf appeals board overruled the protest reinstating them back to the tournament.

Banyana, Nigeria and the Guineans will be based in the Cape Coast where they will be playing their matches.

The official Nigeria FA website reports that the Falcons spent the last six days at a football facility, Sol Beni Sports Centre (owned by ASEC Mimosas Football Club) in Abidjan, following a three week preparatory program at the Jubilee Chalets and Resort in Epe, Lagos State.

"Only Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea have been successful at the 20-year old continental fiesta, with the latter emerging winners on the only two previous occasions that Nigeria did not triumph," the NFF reports.

While the Guineans have won on the only two occasions they hosted the tournament (2008 and 2012), the Super Falcons have established Africa as their footstool, winning at home in 1998, 2002 and 2006, winning in South Africa in 2000, 2004 and 2010, winning in Namibia in 2014 and winning in Cameroon in 2016.

In the other group are hosts Ghana, Algeria, Mali and Cameroon who will battle it out in Group A in Accra.

Among South African players who will do duty for South Africa include goalkeeper Kaylin Swart, Lebohang Ramalepe, captain Janine van Wyk, Leandra Smeda, Thembi Kgatlana, Jermain Seoposenwe.

Re: Nigeria Vs South Africa: (AWCON) 2018 Women Cup Of Nations - 0 - 1 (Full Time) by naptu2: 1:46pm On Nov 06, 2018
The Super Falcons are the most successful African national team (male or female). They have won the African Women's Championship/Nations Cup 10 times; 1991, 1995, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2016 (the 1991 and 1995 editions were played on home and away basis).

The most successful African men's national team is Egypt, which has won the Nations Cup 7 times.

Nigeria also defeated South Africa in the finals of the 1995 and 2000 editions of the Nations Cup. In 1995 Nigeria defeated South Africa 1-4 in South Africa and 7-1 in Nigeria.

In the final of the 2000 African Women Championship (which was hosted by South Africa), Nigeria took the lead in the 30th minute via a goal by Yusuf. Stella Mbachu scored a second goal in the 72nd minute and the home crowd realized there was no coming back. Supporters began hurling bottles and other debris at officials and Nigerian players. Rocks hit Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Anne Agumanu and she picked up a huge stone that had been thrown at her and showed it to the referee.

The match was abandoned after three attempts at restarts were all interrupted by further disturbance. Riot police began fighting battles with bottle-throwing supporters about 40 minutes after the goal had been allowed, throwing tear gas into the crowd to break up the disturbance. The game and the tournament were awarded to Nigeria.

However, South Africa defeated Nigeria 0-1 in the semi-final of the 2012 tournament courtesy of a long range shot by Banyana Banyana's current captain, Janine Van Wyk.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpJXUJRD8_I

Nigeria has failed to win the championship on only two occasions, 2008 and 2012. The tournament was won by Equatorial Guinea on both those occasions. Nigerian, South African and Ghanaian players often accused the Equatorial Guineans of fielding ineligible players. The Equatorial Guineans have been accused of fielding men (pretending to be women) and foreigners from Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana, Burkina Faso and Brazil. The Simpore “sisters” were two siblings from Burkina Faso that played for Equatorial Guinea. It was later discovered that they were actually men. They were removed from the national team when Equatorial Guinea hired a Brazilian coach who refused to allow them to play in the team.

Equatorial Guinea were banned from the last AWCON for fielding an ineligible player in the qualifiers and they have been banned from this AWCON for fielding an ineligible player in their qualifying match against Kenya (Kenya replaced them in the draw). The CAF Appeals Committee later reinstated Equatorial Guinea to the Nations Cup (https://www.nairaland.com/4833778/danger-super-falcons-caf-reinstates) and that has made this match even more important as this has become the group of death.

Players to watch out for

Nigeria

Asisat Oshoala

Asisat Oshoala is a three time African footballer of the year. She won the award in 2014, 2016 and 2017. She is a striker who can play on the right or centre of the attack (she played as a midfielder in her earlier years).

She was the best player and highest goal scorer at the 2014 FIFA Under 20 World Cup as Nigeria came second in the tournament. She was also the BBC Women's Player of the Year 2015.

Asisat Oshoala obviously loves the AWCON. She was the best player and second highest goal scorer at the 2014 AWCON. She was also the highest goal scorer at the 2016 AWCON as Nigeria successfully defended its title.

Oshoala has also been successful at club level. She was the highest goal scorer in the Nigerian League in 2013. She won the English FA Cup with Arsenal in 2016. She helped Dalian to back to back titles in the Chinese Women's Super League in the 2017 and 2018 seasons. She was also the highest goal scorer in the 2017 season as Dalian won both the league and the cup and she was the second highest goal scorer in the 2018 season.

Desire Oparanozie

Desire Oparanozie is Nigeria’s top 9. She’s like the female Rashidi Yekini. She was the highest goal scorer at the 2014 AWCON in Namibia. She might have been the highest goal scorer at the 2016 AWCON, but she got injured during the tournament. She came back in time to score a free kick goal against South Africa in the semi-final. She scored the only goal in the final that won Nigeria the 2016 AWCON.

Oparanozie has also scored fantastic goals for her French club Guingamp.

Desire Oparanozie's long range goal against Paris FC has been voted the goal of the month for February by readers of international women's football website Women's Soccer United.

Here's a video of the goal.

Desire Oparanozie scored twice in EA Guingamp’s 3-1 victory over Paris FC on February 17th, 2018. She bulldozed her way through the Paris defence to score Guingamp’s equaliser in the 27th minute and in the 89th minute Oparanozie scored from the centre circle to give Guingamp a 3-1 victory.

Ngozi Okobi

Ngozi Okobi’s primary role is as an attacking midfielder for the Super Falcons, but she can play in almost any role in the midfield. She is known for her long range goals, like the spectacular volley that she scored against Kenya in the last AWCON.

Ngozi Okobi played for Delta Queens in the Nigerian League before moving to Washington Spirit in 2015 (following in the footsteps of Francisca Ordega). She moved to Vitssjo in the Swedish league in 2016 before moving to Eskilstuna, also in the Swedish league this year.

Okobi played for the Flamingos at the Under 17 World Cup in 2010 and for the Falconets at the 2012 Under 20 World Cup. She also played for the Super Falcons at the 2015 Women’s World Cup.

Rasheedat Ajibade

Rasheedat Ajibade has been the star of the Nigerian junior national teams (the Flamingos and the Falconets) in the past few years. She played for Nigeria at the 2014 and 2016 Under 17 World Cups. She was the captain of the Flamingos at the 2016 World Cup.

She also played for Nigeria at the 2016 and 2018 Under 20 World Cups. She was the captain of the Falconets at the 2018 World Cup.

Ajibade made her debut for the Super Falcons at the WAFU Cup competition in 2017. However, Nigeria fielded a home based team at the competition.

She was the joint highest goal scorer and best player in the Nigerian League in 2017. She plays for FC Robo in Lagos.

Rasheedat Ajibade has a lot in common with her mentor, Asisat Oshoala. Oshoala also played for FC Robo and she was also a star of the Falconets team at an Under 20 World Cup.

She is the 2017 and 2018 Nigerian Freestyle Champion. Freestyle Football is a competition in which people perform tricks with a football on a stage and competitors are judged based on the difficulty of the tricks that they perform.

Rasheedat Ajibade can play on the left of the attack, the right of the attack or just behind the top striker.

The Falconets of Nigeria defeated the Basetsana of South Africa 0-2 in Polokwane via goals by Rasheedat Ajibade and Anam Imo.

South Africa

Janine Van Wyk

Janine Van Wyk is South Africa's captain and most experienced player. She plays as a defender for Houston Dash in the US.

Janine recently won her 150th cap for South Africa, making her the most capped South African player ever (male or female). Nigeria has featured prominently in her long career with Banyana Banyana. She played her first ever match for South Africa against Nigeria in 2005.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyWuJXfQXuQ

One of the high points of her career was in 2012, when she scored the only goal to give South Africa a 1-0 victory over Nigeria in the semi final of the Nations Cup. (pictures below: Janine Van Wyk celebrates after scoring in the 23rd minute to give South Africa victory over Nigeria in the semi final of the 2012 Nations Cup)

AWCON 2018 is very important to Janine. She believes that its her last opportunity to qualify for the World Cup. She turned down an opportunity to play for Houston Dash next season and returned to South Africa in order to help Banyana Banyana prepare properly for the Nations Cup.

It was a big deal when Janine was signed by Houston Dash. She's the first South African female footballer to play for a major club in a big league. South Africa's former coach, Vera Pauw, was appointed as the coach of Houston Dash and fellow Banyana players, Linda Mothlalo and Thembi Kgatlana also joined Houston, making it easier for her to adjust to playing in the US. She has sacrificed all that to ensure that South Africa qualify for the World Cup. She'll have her work cut out for her trying to keep out Nigeria's awesome forward line of Oparanozie, Oshoala, Ordega and Okobi.

Nigerians are extra.

Banyana Banyana posted a picture of their goalkeeper juggling a ball and a Nigerian commented,

And that is how she will be juggling the ball inside the net when @AsisatOshoala @oparanozie9 and @OrdegaF scores her on the 18th. Full Time in Cape Coast @NGSuper_Falcons 3 @Banyana_Banyana 0

There was an article in Kickoff about Janine Van Wyk's decision to leave her club in America and return to Africa so that she can focus on Helping Banyana Banyana qualify for the World Cup. A Nigerian commented below the article:

If you are in the same group with Nigeria, you are not going anywhere.

Thomas Dennerby: Why I included Rasheedat Ajibade and Anam Imo in Nigeria squad

Samuel Ahmadu
Correspondent

The Falconets striking duo could make their first Africa Women's Cup of Nations appearance and the Swede has explained their inclusion

Thomas Dennerby says he included Rasheedat Ajibade and Anam Imo in Nigeria's 2018 Africa Women's Cup of Nations squad to help the U20 Women's World Cup stars gain experience.

The Falconets duo were named in the 21-woman final squad by the Swede despite their uninspiring display at the 2018 Fifa U20 Women's World Cup in France in August.

Earlier in February, both starred in the Super Falcons' bronze-winning campaign at the 2018 Women's WAFU Cup in Abidjan, where they defeated Mali 2-1 in the third place match.

Despite their lack of experience, the 59-year-old is unmoved as he believes both strikers can build upon their World Cup experience from France in Ghana.

"As a coach, it is always good if you can show that you trust them, especially when it's young players because they need more support," Dennerby told Goal.

"As long as you are a player and the older you're, you will need less support and less instruction. It is like when you start in school, the young you're - you need more instructions.

"And after a couple of years, you have to start to learn some by yourself. In the end, you can be part of teaching younger girls on and off the pitch, especially on how to behave when in camp.

"That's why it was good some of them were at the U20 Women's World Cup tournament and being aware of what if takes to play on the big stage and being part of such long camping is quite different from being at home."

Dennerby further pledged to offer Ajibade and Imo some minutes to gain experience at the tournament, while stressing his side's determination to impress and retain the title.

"I think Ajibade have a unique playing vision and she really has the feeling of what to do and where to run when on the field." he continued.

"She also has something that is really important which is making players around her do better because she is smart and also creates space for others.

"For Anam, she also has her own special strength, using her speed, good touches and energy. In our friendly game against the boys (Dominion Hotspur), we had a good period on the right side in the last 30 minutes and we created chances and scored from it.

"Of course, they are young and we don't expect that they are the one that will run the team. We hope during the tournament we can bring them in to gain experience for the future but when it comes to the big games, we have to win and perform well.

"It all depends on how the games look like. I and Jorgen and the rest of the coaching staff will have to take the decisions when we see what happens in the games. You could have a plan going into a match but it could also change quickly."

The only other team to have won the cup, apart from Nigeria, is Equatorial Guinea and they've often been accused of cheating. Equatorial Guinea won the cup on 2008 and 2012. They've been accused of fielding Nigerians, Cameroonians, Brazilians and even men in their team.

Nigeria has benefitted from the fact that we started playing women's football early and our league has been running non-stop since the early 1990s. Many of our players have also gone to play abroad and they gained a lot of experience that way.

•2018 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations set to get under way
•Tournament hosts Ghana among the favourites
•Three tickets to France 2019 available

Only four places at the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019™ remain to be claimed. One of them will go to the best team in the Oceania Zone and the other three will be allocated at the upcoming 2018 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

FIFA.com sets the scene for the competition and runs the rule over the contenders. Surprisingly, Côte d’Ivoire are not among them. Having made it to the last world finals in Canada in 2015, the Ivorians will not be vying for glory this time, after falling in the last round of qualifying.

The lowdown on the 2018 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations

When: 17 November to 1 December
Where: Ghana (Accra and Cape Coast)
Qualified teams:
Group A: Ghana, Mali, Cameroon, Algeria
Group B: South Africa, Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, Zambia
Format: two groups of four, with the top two in each group going through to the semi-finals
Stakes: the winners, runners-up and third-placed team all qualify for France 2019

The favourites

Perhaps that heading should read, “The favourite”, for the simple reason that Nigeria have won the competition ten times out of a possible 12 since it was first held. And on the two occasions when they failed to lift the trophy, the Super Falcons reached the semi-finals. Not surprisingly for a team with such an impressive record they are strongly fancied to land another African title, thanks in no small part to the front line formed by Asisat Oshoala, Francisca Ordega and Desire Oparanozie.

The two continental crowns that escaped Nigeria’s grasp were both claimed by Equatorial Guinea, who are also rightly regarded as genuine contenders. Initially suspended on administrative grounds, the Nzalang Nacional have recently been cleared to play in the competition, having beaten Kenya to qualify. They will hope to figure among the three sides representing Africa at France 2019.

A major power on the African women’s football scene, Ghana are looking to return to the world finals for the first time since 2007. The Black Queens will hope to make the most of home advantage and claim a top-three finish. Meanwhile, Cameroon, who made their Women’s World Cup debut in Canada four years ago, would appear to have a genuine chance of appearing on the global stage again. The Indomitable Lionesses finished runners-up to Nigeria at the last two continental finals and are keen to go one better this time around.

The outsiders

Aside from the aforementioned favourites, the other leading contender for a place at France 2019 are South Africa, the winners of this year’s COSAFA Women’s Cup. The Banyana Banyana beat Lesotho 7-0 on aggregate to secure their ticket to Ghana and are captained by Janine Van Wyk, the most capped player in African football – men’s and women’s. Their sights are set on nothing less than a place on the podium.

Algeria are taking part in the African finals for the fifth time and would be more than happy with a semi-final place. The Fennecs Dames (“Female Desert Foxes”) suffered a major blow, however, when forward Naima Bouhani picked up an injury in the countdown to the tournament. Making their second appearance in the competition, Zambia will be keen to spring a surprise or two.

Last year’s COSAFA Women’s Cup runners-up, the Shepolopolo built on that promising showing by knocking out Zimbabwe to qualify for Ghana 2018. After losing 1-0 at home in the first leg, they recorded a 2-1 win in the return to advance on the away-goals rule. Finally, Mali are under no illusions about the task awaiting them in a Group A in which Cameroon and Ghana start as the most fancied sides. Reaching the last four for the first time in their history would be quite an achievement for the Malians.

What they said

“We’re not scared of anyone. All the teams are there to win the trophy, which is our objective too. There won’t be an easy match but we know what we have to do.”
Ghana coach Bashirou Hayford

“If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. We’ve played the three teams in our group before so we know what to expect.”
South Africa coach Desire Ellis

wow

The very first time that I watched a real women's football match was in 1989. All the matches I watched before then were exhibition matches that were more of comic relief than serious athletic contests.

Lagos State hosted the National Sports Festival and the venue of the women's football competition was close to my house. Many states came with teams that were really not very good, but Lagos, Bendel and Rivers states were in a completely different class from the rest. Those three states beat other states with massive scorelines like 6-0, 8-0, etc. Their players were fit and a joy to watch. The arena was always full when these three states were playing.

I later found out why these three states were better than the rest. They had professional women's football clubs and most of the girls that represented those states were from those clubs.

There was Jegede Babes in Lagos, Ufuoma Babes in Bendel and Larry's Angels in Rivers State.

Girls from those three clubs formed the nucleus of our first national team.

Meanwhile, other African countries had not even considered women's football in 1989.
