Premier League pundit Charlie Nicholas admits Ross Barkley’s transfer to Chelsea from Everton was a surprise.

Barkley was once hailed as one of the most exciting and talented young English players in the Premier League after bursting into the scene at Goodison Park and was tipped to become a global superstar.

However, inconsistency, poor performances and lack of belief from his managers has meant that Barkley’s development has not been at the required stage and he stagnated at Goodison Park towards the back end of his days there.

However, last January Antonio Conte made the surprise decision to make a move for Barkley as he looked to add a bit more creativity to the side, and under the guidance of the Italian he didn’t make much of an impact.

But Barkley has finally found his feet at Stamford Bridge after a difficult beginning in west London due to injuries, and he has become a big part of Maurizio Sarri’s plans, starting in a number of Premier League and Europa League fixtures this season.

And Nicolas has admitted his move to Stamford Bridge was a big surprise, telling the Sky Sports website: “I think we were all quite surprised that he picked Chelsea and if he was going to get in the team.

“It’s taken quite a bit of time and for a new manager to come in and say ‘I like your technical ability but you’ve got to move on’.

“The lad’s career has moved on, he’s back in the international setup and he’s playing very well at the moment. So the signs are good for him.”

Will Barkley reach his full potential at Stamford Bridge?

Barkley is a quality young midfielder that has all the anility to be a real superstar at Stamford Bridge, and is Sarri can continue to give him the game time and faith that he has been over the first few months of the season, then yes he can reach his full potential.

He was far too inconsistent at Everton and was criticised for his performances, but Under Sarri he seems to be playing the kind of football that attracted Conte to a deal last January, and many Blues fans will be hoping he continues his great start to the new season.
