I know the normal way of getting in as full permanent staff, but the contract path is confusing. How is it done?

Through outsourcing firms or oil & gas servicing firms.

For example: ExxonMobil can award a 10yr contract to boss oil & gas servicing to build a new oil rig. Boss oil & gas will have to recruit people to carry out the job.

Example 2: some outsourcing firms specialize in recruiting for oil and gas just like they do banks to safe cost. You can be a contract staff for yrs earnings same salary.

The name of the outsourcing firm is Scruples resources Limited and as you can see they are recruiting for ExxonMobil so if someone finally gets the job he/she will be seconded to ExxonMobil as contract staff this a great way to safe cost for them because they will pay the contract staff lower.
