IN SUMMARY

1. He was caught up in the “Croatian War of Independence” in 1991 when he was six years old.

2.His grandfather was murdered in cold blood by the local Croatian Serb rebels when attending to the cattle.

3.The family fled the area to stay as refugees in a large hotel in Zadar.

Real Madrid’s Luka Modric won the Ballon d’Or on Monday to end a 10-year stranglehold on the award by Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Modric was announced as the winner of the prestigious prize in Paris ahead of Ronaldo and French World Cup winner Antoine Griezmann.

Here are five things you may not know about the 33-year-old midfielder.

1.He was born in the village of “Modrici”, where he first put on a pair of boots.

2.He married Vanja Bosnic in May 2010 in the Croatian capital of Zagreb in a private ceremony after dating her for four years.

3.He has three kids; son Ivano and two daughters Ema and Sofia.

4.He was caught up in the “Croatian War of Independence” in 1991 when he was six years old. His grandfather was murdered in cold blood by the local Croatian Serb rebels when attending to the cattle. The family fled the area to stay as refugees in a large hotel in Zadar.

5.Carlo Ancelloti is his favourite manager. The Croat, since moving to Real Madrid in 2012, has worked under five managers namely Jose Mourinho, Ancelotti, Rafael Benitez, Zinedine Zidane and currently Santiago Solari but once admitted in an interview with BBC that the Italian remains his best manager he has played under.
“We had a great relationship, we still have a good one, that’s why I would pick him,” claimed Modric on BBC on the Italian whom they won the Uefa Champions League and Copa del Rey with.

He was charged with perjury for stating that he annexed his fee at an earlier date than he allegedly had in an embezzlement and tax evasion trial against the former Dinamo Zagreb executive Zdravko Mamic.

Good for him. This now put to rest Messi's superiority of being a football god. Anyways, I still believe has worked hard to earn this award too!!! wink

FIFA Ballon d'Or 2010- 8 years on...
The 2018 Ballon d'or held in Paris, France last night saw Luka Modric go home with the much coveted prestigious award. The Croatian international ending the 10 years duopoly of the award by Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi(who both have won the award a staggering 5 times each) in a year that also saw him win the UEFA Champions League, silver medal at the FIFA World Cup™ and the inaugural FIFA The Best Men Player of the year award. A long-awaited break in the seemingly unending long streak of Ronaldo-Messi yearly shows for some football fans. Over the past 10 years, quite a few players have come close to been tipped as a possible a winner, notable names include Neymar Jnr, Ribery, Iniesta, Xavi e.t.c, but non comes so readily to mind like Wesley Sneijder's in 2010. The Dutchman enjoyed an almost flawless record-breaking season winning every major club competitions he played in (Treble with Internazionale along with the FIFA Club World Cup later that year; the greatest season in the club's history), his only disappointment being a last-gasp FIFA World Cup™ final loss to Spain. Not unlike what Luka Modric's season looks like, if not better arguably, Sneijder won both Bronze Boot and Silver Ball at the World Cup, UEFA midfielder of the year, Top assist-provider in the UCL and an appearance in both the Team of the World Cup and UEFA Team of the year. It was only expected for fans and pundits across the world to tip the then 26 year old playmaker who was having the form of his life for Ballon d'Or success.
However, it came as some sort of a rude shock to fans especially, when the FIFA Ballon d'Or top 3 nominees were named and Sneijder's name was nowhere to be found. The Award eventually going to Lionel Messi( his 2nd consecutive one at the time) under rather controversial circumstances, with fellow Barcelona teammates Xavi and Iniesta bringing up the rear.
Yesternight's awards has once again sparked the old debate about why Wesley Sneijder was denied Ballon d'Or success in 2010 most especially now Luka Modric has won under the exact same circumstances. Can we safely assume FIFA(partners at the time) was prejudiced and played huge political sentiments in their choices then? Was Luka Modric really the right man for the award last night or should it have gone to Cristiano Ronaldo; a former teammate whose decisive goals categorically helped Real Madrid to their 3rd straight UCL title? Which was the correct choice; LM10 2010 or LM10 2018? Does Wesley Sneijder and co. deserve an apology/compensation from FIFA and The French Football Magazine? Was Luka Modric's choice of a winner is of reason none other than to stop the duopoly of Leo Messi and CR7?
Questions we want answers to as football enthusiasts. But alas! We can only wonder.
