Hi guys, Does anyone know how to judge object scale from photographs or drawings in blender or 3ds max? If there's no reference, how do you also determine your scale?

Regarding 3DSMax, one thing l'll suggest you do, is set your units from the generic units to meters [if not in usa], or feets [if in usa], add a reference object you can remove later - say the usual teapot, and scale/size this teapot to match a real worldl size.

For eg. I'll place a human model, which should be 6ft=72inches next to a teapot which in usa is radius=4inches and height=8 inches.

Menu options you want in 3dsmax is - customize, unit setup

On the left side, you can also select measuring tools in 3dsmax to measure any object in your scene. The 1st picture below shows this menu on the RHS.

If you import your reference picture as a map on a plane, you should be able to use the above mentioned tools to help with scaling.

The bottom picture shows the unit setup menu option.

Hope this helps.
