The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) says it may not honour further calls by Federal Government for a meeting on the way forward over the current strike by its members.

The union’s National President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, said this on the sideline of a news conference on the update of the union’s struggle to salvage the country’s public universities from deterioration on Sunday in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the members of the union, under the aegis of ASUU, had on Nov. 4, embarked on what it had described as a ‘total, comprehensive and indefinite strike’.

Members of the union were protesting the non implementation of agreements entered into with the federal government in 2009 and 2017, as well as funding and improved welfare for members, among other issues.

According to Ogunyemi, to ensure that the agreements were implemented, union had held series of consultative meetings with the government and written series of letters with little or nothing to the effect.

He noted that it was against this backdrop that union resumed strike on Nov. 4. “Since the commencement of this strike, we have had six meetings with agents of the Federal Government, with no clear commitment from government to resolving the issues we presented. “Government appears to have adopted ‘keep them talking’ strategy while deceiving the public that progress was being made and that partial agreements had been reached between union and government.

“We want to say that government has continually and falsely raised the hopes of the Nigerian public on the state of duscussion with our union and we may not be interested in holding further dialogue with them until we see signs of commitment and sincerity in addressing the issues before them.

“Our expectation from a very responsive and sincere position is that by now, all outstanding issues would gave been resolved to the satisfaction of both parties.

“Unfortunately, government is yet to show commitment and sincerity in addressing these problems,” he said. According to the don, on the renegotiation of federal government/ASUU agreeement, there are still unresolved issues about the leadership of the government team. “We have strong reasons to believe that the continuation of Dr Wale Babalakin as the head of the renegotiation with ASUU will not yield good fruit,” he said.

Ogunyemi said union had taken up its current project as a life time, adding that this was why dating back to the 1980s, union had remained consistent on what was of concern to it. “If we miss education, we miss development as we will end up being enslaved the second time.

“What is happening in this country now is that people are privatising everything, including education and before we know it, what happened to our primary and secondary education will happen. “And these are some of the things we are supposed to be tracking and engaged in this society, if we want to make the change that we need.

“Our conviction is the reason behind the prolonged strike and our members have the conviction that until we get education right, Nigeria will never get it right.

“Insurgency will increase, banditry, poverty, kidnapping, misery and other societal ills will continue. “Let me also state clearly too that our strike has nothing to do with politics or election, as is being speculated in some sectors of the society.

“We have never thought of aborting any election. We do not want to create problem for this country but let government do the right thing,” he said. Ogunyemi said that the situation might have to rise to the point where Nigerians would have to tell government what to do with the country’s education system.

He said the union appreciated the understanding of the Nigerian students, their parents, among whom were many ASUU members and other people of goodwill since the resumption of the avoidable strike.

“ASUU does not take your sacrifice for granted. With your continued support and sacrifice, we can make the Nigerian ruling class come to accept the centrality of university education in improving the human condition.

“Qualitative and public-funded education is not an option; it is inevitable if Nigeria ever wishes to banish poverty, ignirance, sqaulor, insecurity, disease and curruption." Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has demanded for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to retract a statement claiming that the strike by university lecturers could jeopardise the 2019 elections.

The spokesperson of SSANU, Abdussobur Salaam, told Premium Times on Friday morning, December 21, that the statement by INEC was highly unfortunate and unbecoming of the national electoral umpire.

Enough of this scamming pls

I want to use this medium to emphatically call on Nigerian youths aspiring to get into the university, and those already in the system to call for the resignation of the minister of education who has failed them as far as improve education is concern..

This government has shown that it doesn't have value for equipping the leaders of Tomorrow as far as education is concern..

One of the demands of ASUU today is the 100 billion naira funding for the Universities to enable them upgrade the quality of graduates that are released into the system on yearly basis.. However, the government has given a silent hearing to this for over six years now..

100 billion seems so big, yes... But are we all aware of the budget that INEC presented which will gulp over 130 billion next year , and the presidency within the space of three months ensured that the money is approved by NASS.. Do you agree that squeezing out 100 billion naira from our budget will bring Nigeria into non existence? Why are we on this part..

And these youths are the ones championing the call for four over four where the same government cannot look at the eyes of the average Nigeria youth and boast of job created and quality education given.. This is to tell that we do not have great value for our future and our generation to come..

I'm pain with these situations and I want anyone quoting me not to insult but to criticise me with wisdom because I've not come to fight..

God bless the Nigerian youths and pray that we get right some day

Will it cost the FG lives just to pay ASUU and call off the strike? The money is there to pay, but no, they still remain recaltricant. I think Laws should be made to restrict the children of politicans from schooling abroad. This will make them know how we feel when they're not willing to improve the education sector. Remember that you'll never fully understand someone's situation unless you're in their shoes.

Exactly. ASUU has become a very useless body and a thorn in the flesh of Nigerians, wasting precious time of Nigerian students.

Imagine ASUU demanding N3trillion funding in 2009 for Universities alone (excluding primary and secondary schools, polytechnics, etc.), when the federal budget for the same year was N3trillion. Then another N1.3trillion agreement in 2013.
So govt should abandon all sectors and salaries of workers to improve universities only. sad
They embark on long, needless strike actions and govt is coerced into making agreements just to end the strike, then they later accuse govt of not fulfilling near impossible agreements.

ASUU or whatever you call yourselves...Can Nigerian universities develop faster than the country? Should we abandon roads, rails, electricity, etc. for university funding alone so that ASUU members can die on bad roads?

Nigerian university students should by now have besieged Aso Rock or even demand to be accommodated there like Yusuf Buhari, pending the time their universities are re-opened.

Unfortunately, many of them are preoccupied with distraction of all kind.

I guess their eyes will be opened when the Yuletide is over and they realise they may spend another three or four months at home.

Will anything ever work with Buhari' s government? A president that doesn't know what is happening in his government. Rather cabal knows! That's why I trust the candidacy of Atiku and Peter because they value education much. Buhari can never give what he does not have.
