Surrogate mothers exist in Nigeria but many don't know about this. It's mostly done secretly, maybe due to stigma.

AFP documentary looks at surrogacy in Nigeria. AFP shares this video about surrogacy in Nigeria and wrote:

"In Nigeria, many agencies offer surrogacy to couples struggling to conceive a child. The fertility business is considered taboo and operates secretively but, despite the country being highly religious and conservative, it is booming".

The AFP surrogacy documentary features Mrs Lolu-Ogunmade who has a foundation for people with fertility issues. She says:

"Surrogacy is in Nigeria. Once you do it legally, you sign necessary papers, you get a lawyer, you get an agency like ours, we put you through the process, you are safe.

Then at the end of the day, when the surrogate gives birth, the hospital hands over the baby to you directly.

AFP reports that surrogacy services are not prohibited in Nigeria.

AFP interviews Ada, a surrogate mother, whose family was initially faced with accommodation problem, eviction threat.

Ada opted to be a surrogate mother.

During her pregnancy, Ada was paid and provided with an accommodation.

Watch the video here to see how much surrogate mothers earn in Nigeria. See more photos after the cut...

What exactly should be encouraged ?

Preying on young desperately poor women ? Using human beings as incubators for babies and thereafter discarding them ? Putting women through all the risks and dangers of pregnancy without the corresponding benefits ? Being a middle man for a borderline shady practice ?

Do you realize that a rich woman will never become a surrogate mother for a poor woman who needs a baby ? That indicates to me what this is really about

This practice is exploitative and immoral. It is on par with sex change operations and organ harvesting. People have had fertility issues since the dawn of time and they did not die. The world did not come to an end.

If you cannot have a baby, adopt one.

Good one.....But not easy a decision to make from both sides. This is what you can get at IVF / Fertility clinics like Fusion Nest ( http://fusionnestng.com/ )....

While Hospitals like Outreach Women and Children Hospital Festac (http://outreachgroup.com.ng/neonatal-intensive-care-unit/ ) takes care of another important aspect of child's health, which is preterm babies. Babies born too early that need special medical care and unit to survive.

Let it continue to be hush hush. If it becomes popular, I expect Nigerians to mess it up with like every other thing they mess up.

Families will forcefully turn their maids or distant female relatives to surrogates.

Men with ice fish brain will turn their surrogates to mistresses because they don't know how to separate business from anything else as far as a female is concerned.

Since it's already legal, govt should encourage and regulate it to reduce and possibly prevent child theft and baby factory practices especially in the south east

Really! What even is the difference between this practice and those women in the east used just to breed children put up for sale for God knows what?

The surrogate mom can never access the child because of the signed NDA agreement. The hospital or agency do not follow up with the new parent. Not bound too. That can also be because of a ND clause in the agreement. If the new parents are not trying to pass off the child as their's, then what really is the reason for this? And if the new parents are not actually passing it off as their's, why not just adopt so that the parent can at least see the child or at least know how the child is faring, periodically?

With the craziness going on in this country, i won't be shocked if some of these surrogate babies are gotten for purposes other than raising them as part of a loving family.

I hope I'm wrong however.

EDIT
So, I read up on what surrogacy is all about. My response was based on an incomplete understanding of what it means. Of all the types of surrogacy there is, I do not subscribe to one where both the egg or sperm is not related to the intended parent or parents. Also, for this type of surrogacy and for most type really, there should be a periodic check on the surrogate baby/child. No issues with sincere people wanting offsprings this way but this is Nigeria. A semblance of regulation is desirable than zero regulation.

what is wrong in someone who cannot give birth for one health reasons or the other for the both couples to decide to use their egg and sperm to grow a baby in another woman's womb . after all there is an agreement between the woman that will carry the baby. it's not like they kidnapped one girl to force her to carry their baby. it's a mutual agreement .

you are just a typical black man whose mind is black and who refuse to see the millions of advantages of surrogate but choose to see the 10 disadvantages that comes with it.

I have listed the wrongs in my previous post. I assume you can read.

Your oyibo masters brought us sex change, drug addiction, pornography, pedophilia now surrogacy. All these were things hitherto unknown to Africa. How has that worked out ?
I am proud to be a black man. You on the other hand are brainwashed nonentity unsure of his identity.
