Obviously the above statement has become the concept of which the Nigerian young society is now defined, i tuned in to STV and all the music videos portrays semi-nude girls gyrating, my old man use to complain abt d excessive show of flesh on MTV, i wonder what he'd say now. On campus, streets and even church ur being bombarded with these. I would like to knw if girls on the street dn't show excessive flesh they won't get noticed? Or won't the music videos sell without these semi-nude A*s gyrating girls? Whats ur take? |

it's all about getting attention and copying the so called "western and civilized world". It also comes from the fact that men like the look of young and firm flesh. |

It really kills me that people have resorted to behind shaking in order to sell records in Nigeria. Its one thing to say you want to express yourself as an artist its another to conform to western beliefs. Don't get me wrong not everything about western society is bad, but it seems as thought Nigerians [and other African nations] seems to like picking up aspects of western society that makes us [Nigerians and fellow Africans] feel that we need t resort to that sort of thing. Like in Nigerian movies for example, there is a LOT of emphasis on sexuality. As an advertising student, I know sex sells and yes the Nigerian entertainment industry is trying to keep up with the west but there are others ways to keep up. I've noticed that in Bollywood movies, they've managed to balance traditional Indian beliefs with the ever changing western beliefs on sex. |

Some people wanna see sex and shaking and dry humping. So you make money from that market. Sex sells. . .always has, prolly always will. I'm indifferent. I like artsy videos and underground music so it doesn't really register when i see all these videos. Besides sometimes, people are so intent on castigating or judging something totally forgetting about themselves. And they can be just as bad or good if not worse or better. |

When i need to listen to music, i get my radio or audio player working, can't stand all the "porn" views, too slutty to me. Why waste time on music videos when there's discovery channel? |
Re: If It Ain't Shaking, It Ain't Selling by Bamsyle2(m): 10:22am On Aug 09, 2010 |
Without trying to sound judgmental, folks with no impressive message in their songs usually do that . . . IMO, a song with an impressive message does not tally with a raunchy video . . . I can't imagine all the flesh 'n' stuff in Nas' "One Mic" . . . Yes sex sells . . . it's about using corporate branding and adverts to sell chaff . . . something's gotta give. |

Since when did half naked women and booty shaking become inventions of the western world? |

Krayola: Erm . . . didn't you hear that Fela is from France?? And all those booty shaking traditional dancers are from East Germany. martyns303: Effrebor, Delicious, Shake Sumn, Bang Bang Bang . . .shall I continue?? |

Bamsyle.: 3ex is an impressive message in its own right, it's a part of contemporary society and it's a big part of everything else, so it's only normal that it be portrayed in music videos. How've you been BTW?? |

You guys haven't seen anything yet, how many of you lot watches Jamaican videos? you'd see what your mouth can't tell. R.Kelly already shot videos with nak, ed girls and not only him, alot of other American musicians, give Nigeria 5 years, you'd be seeing the same thing happening here. |

eldee: I agree sex is a message . . . fact is everything is a message . . . even if all I do is sneeze and cough on a track, it can connote all sorts of messages - I have a cold . . . or I'm just an i.mbecile . . . For want of a better word to qualify "message", I had to use "impressive" . . . it all depends on what appeals to us . . . most times, I love stuff with heavy lyrical content . . . this comes mostly from the griots of Rap Music . . . and most times, these folks just spit pure unadulterated and deep ish . . . devoid of unnecessary display of flesh . . . and I'm cool with that . . . But on the flip side, I like to see 'em raw stuff at times . . . ain't we all human?? How've you been BTW?? Great . . . you?? |
Re: If It Ain't Shaking, It Ain't Selling by eldee(m): 7:44pm On Aug 09, 2010 |
Bamsyle.: Hehehe . . . you're already insulting my intelligence with that 'sneezing' example. Sex is a big message, it's different from sneezing or playing Call of Duty and we all know that. There's a reason why on every survey on what most affects young people sex and not sneezing is in the top three. Music is an expression of society, sex probably comes only next to religion and money in the contemporary Nigerian society and much higher in young people. Society places much emphasis on sex, it will be criminal if music does not portray it. 'Impressive'?? That's a subjective opinion, I find sex impressive, maybe it's just because I'm good at it. |

eldee: Sex is everywhere around us . . . you don't need to switch on your TV set or read Playboy to see it . . . . . . we're constantly inundated by it every day and everywhere - the classrooms, the markets, at work, even in church . . . it's all in our faces, so what's the essence of selling it to me?? And hell no, even if you must sell it, not through music. Music is an expression of society, sex probably comes only next to religion and money in the contemporary Nigerian society and much higher in young people. I agree . . . but you need to see the bigger picture . . . sex enslaves . . . and you'll do well to break yourself from it's shackles . . . and see the bigger picture . . . it's the reason a large percentage of the youth populace ain't productive . . . the reason some of us will end up scoring an "F" where we could've had an "A" . . . 'Impressive'?? That's a subjective opinion, I find sex impressive, maybe it's just because I'm good at it. Yes, I agree . . . and that was why I added "IMO" at the beginning of ma post . . . Also, I always wanna really do what I appear to be doing . . . what would I gain from watching Sisqo's "Thong Song", when I can as well watch a sex movie?? Or better still, have sex?? Pardon me for sounding extreme, but is my testosterone level higher than yours?? |

@Eldee What kind of B.S are you spewing here?? to think you can even sit in front of your PC and type this rubbish is shocking. So because sex is around us means we shouldn't have it in music?? Because Double Star Reverend Bamsyle doesn't want it in a song?? People get slapped for less than this where I grew up. I agree . . . but you need to see the bigger picture . . . sex enslaves . . . and you'll do well to break yourself from it's shackles . . . and see the bigger picture . . . it's the reason a large percentage of the youth populace ain't productive . . . the reason some of us will end up scoring an "F" where we could've had an "A" . . . You are not a very smart man Bamsyle . . . with due respect. I know you went to the Abstinence is the answer seminar, but come the eff on . . . you don't have to give us your silly Deeper Life sermon. I also agree . . . and that was why I added "IMO" at the beginning of ma post . . . So one minute it's 'sex enslaves', the next minute it's 'I'd rather watch a sex movie' . . . Are you Kaydee in disguise?? |

A-40: You're crazy . . . But seriously, I don't digg vids with unnecessary parade of flesh . . . most vids with such are lackin' in lyrics . . . picture "One Mic" with a raunchy vid . . . Funny thing is I might like a song that's got great delivery but's deficient on the lyrical side of things . . . but if the vid's all about raunchiness, believe me I'm out . . . Ask yourself A-40, what's the essence of watching a raunchy music vid when you could watch porn?? Better still, go get some . . . Well, each to his 'pinion, I love sex . . . but maybe I just got tired of all those "shake ya backside/boobs" kinda themes . . . |

Is this new? Femi Kuti sang bang bang over 10yrs ago. Watch Shabaranks videos from the early 90's Obesere has been singing lewd songs and shooting lewd videos for close to 20yrs I saw live bo0bs in Felas live concert which was over 20yrs ago. Booty shaking is not new jare and its part of entertainment. Sex sells |

Bamsyle.:My Guy you funny gan ooh. Why would "One Mic be about raunchy dancers and half-naked women? the song is pretty self explanatory Not everyone wants to listen to nuclear physics and neurosurgery in their spare time they bump songs to get that ish off their minds. Watching a raunchy music video lets just say is a cheaper alternative to paying ashies or going to strip clubs lol. Usually though from the titles of songs you should be able to tell what kind of video you are in for and if you don't like it your tv remote is not just there to decorate your living room |

These days, music fans may have dumbed down a bit. If videos are not flashy and raunchy, you can sing your heart out and these dumb and dumberer kids dont care and wont download jack. I remember when i was really small (primary sch days) and my eldest sis wore shorts to the market in the village (she was in sec sch then). See chaos ; people came to the house to quietly complain to my mum then. Now , the girls selling in the same markets are wearing just panties. Everything has to have sexual connotations to be relevant these days. |
