INEC amends Anambra results, Uba still wins
From Uzoma Nzeagwa, Awka
TWO results were yesterday presented by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the Anambra State governorship election. The separate results however gave the victory to Dr. Andy Uba of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The development came as the opposition parties in the state called for a fresh election. They said people did not vote during the exercise.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Alhaji Nasiri Ayilara, had earlier said that Uba polled 1,930,004 votes to beat the deputy governor and APGA's Dame Virgy Etiaba to the second position with 71,296 votes while Njideka Anyadike of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) scored 14,506 votes.

According to him, 1,987,197 voters were registered in the state. He said that his commission achieved over 95 per cent success in the election. With the result, the total number of people that voted in the polls was 2,015,806, which is higher than the registered voters by 128,609.

Later yesterdeay evening, INEC put the total vote cast at 1,207,557 while 39,942 were declared void. The new result gave Uba 1,093,004 votes, the score by Etibia remained at 71,296 and ADC retained 14,506 votes. Another party, the APS polled 13,959 votes.

Others are DPP, 13,133, CP (9,192), NDP (8,060), PMP (6,688), CPP (1,951), PPA (8,058) and CDC (1,697).

He also declared that 28 of the 30 constituencies in the House of Assembly were won by the PDP. Ayilara explained that Nnewi-North and Nnewi-South local councils' polls were cancelled due to what he called electoral irregularities.

But a coalition of political parties and eminent citizens of the state have declared that there was no election in Anambra. They have, therefore, called on INEC to fix a new date for another election in the state.

The parties and their governorship candidates that rejected the results are Dr. Chris Ngige (AC), Nicholas Ukachukwu (ANPP), Etiaba (APGA), Dr. Alex Obiogbolu (APS), Mrs. Njideka Anyadike (ADC) and Ossy Ezenwa (DPP). They vowed not to accept any result announced by INEC on the basis of the last polls.
