January is Cervical Cancer awareness month. There are 14,943 diagnosed cases of cervical cancer, with 10,403 deaths annually in Nigeria alone.

Cervical cancer which is normally present in the lower-most part of the uterus ( womb ) that opens up into the vagina. is a treatable disease if diagnosed early enough, that's why this material is important.

Below is a highlight of 18 Things you need to know about Cervical Cancer

1) Cervical cancer is the most common malignancy among women in the developing world, and more than 80 percent of worldwide cervical cancer deaths occur in these settings.

2) Most cervical cancer occurs in women who have never been screened or who have had only sporadic screening.

3) Cervical cancer screening strategies such as cervical cytology and colposcopy are not feasible in many low-resource settings due to economic, social, and political issues

4) Strategies for cervical cancer screening in low-resource settings include the use of tests that are performed in a primary care facility by trained nurses or paramedical staff which requires little equipment, technology, and staff training to perform

5) Benefits of cervical cancer screening whether with Papanicolaou (Pap) test or human papillomavirus (HPV) includes early detection and treatment of possible cervical cancer cases thereby lowering the risk of one dying from cervical cancer.

6) The effectiveness of screening also hinges on adequate follow-up and treatment for abnormal results

7) Cervical cancer screening decreases the incidence and mortality of cervical cancer.

cool Cervical cancer is related to infection with specific high-risk strains of human papillomavirus (HPV).

9) In the United States, it is recommended that cervical cancer screening is initiated no earlier than age 21 in immunocompetent, asymptomatic women without additional known risk factors. In such women, screening is initiated at age 21,

10) Primary HPV screening may be an effective screening modality in resource-poor areas (developing countries) If primary HPV screening is used for women over age.

11) We suggest women age ≥30 years who do not have known risk factors be screened with either Pap test every three years or co-testing (Pap test and HPV testing) every five years.

12) Earlier initiation and/or more frequent screening may be warranted for women with special factors that increase risk (eg, immunocompromise, history of high-grade dysplasia, in utero exposure to diethylstilbestrol [DES]).

13) The age at which we discontinue screening takes into account whether the patient had adequate prior screening and her risk factors for cervical cancer, and includes informed discussions of the potential benefits and harms of screening.

14) For older women, continuing screening is contingent on a life expectancy >10 years. Adequate prior screening is defined as three consecutive negative Pap tests within the previous 10 years.

15) For women who have had adequate screening and have no cervical cancer risk factors, the optimal age to discontinue screening is uncertain.

16) For women who have had adequate screening but have cervical cancer risk factors, continuing screening longer than in the general population is suggested.

17) For women with inadequate prior screening, we suggest screening with either a Pap test every three years or co-testing every five years until the patient meets the definition of adequate prior screening.

The strangest thing about Cervical Cancer is that the signs are not quite clear......Most times it stays undetected until it get's to advance stage.
But some of the signs listed below will be of help in early detection of the disease...

- Sudden weight loss
- Menstrual bleeding that is longer and heavier than usual
- Bleeding after intercourse, increase in vaginal discharge, douching, or a pelvic examination
- Pain during sexual intercourse
- Persistent pains in the legs, hips and back
