From ( original Version, aspiration)

When I get older, I will be stronger
They’ll call me freedom, just like a wavin’ flag

When I get older, I will be stronger
They’ll call me freedom, just like a wavin’ flag
And then it goes back
And then it goes back
And then it goes back

Born to a throne, stronger then Rome
A violent prone, poor people zone
But it’s my home, all I have known
Where I got grown, streets we would roam
Out of the darkness, I came the farthest
Among the hardest survivors
Learn from these streets, it can be bleak
Except no defeat, surrender, retreat
So we strugglin’, fightin’ to eat
And we wonderin’, when we’ll be free
So we patiently wait for that fateful day
It’s not far away, but for now we say…

So many wars, settlin’ scores
Bringin’ us promises, leavin’ us poor
I heard ‘em say, love is the way
Love is the answer, that’s what they say
But look how they treat us
Make us believers, we fight their battles
Then they deceive us
Tried to control us, they couldn’t hold us
Cuz we just moved forward like Buffalo Soldiers
But we strugglin’, fightin’ to eat
And we wonderin’, when we’ll be free
So we patiently wait for that fateful day
It’s not far away, but for now we say…

To ( Commercial version, ''Coked'' version if you will

Give me freedom, give me fire, give me reason, take me higher
See the champions, take the field now, unify us, make us feel proud
In the streets our head are liftin’, as we lose our inhibition,
Celebration it surrounds us, every nations, all around us

Singin forever young, singin songs underneath that sun
Lets rejoice in the beautifull game.
And together at the end of the day.

WE ALL SAY

When I get older I will be stronger

They’ll call me freedom Just like a wavin’ flag

Give you freedom, give you fire, give you reason, take you higher
See the champions, take the field now, unify us, make us feel proud
In the streets our head are liftin’, as we lose our inhibition,
Celebration, it surrounds us, every nation, all around us

Singin’ forever young, singin’ songs underneath that sun
Lets rejoice in the beautifull game.
And together at the end of the day.

WE ALL SAY

When I get older, I will be stronger
They’ll call me freedom
Just like a wavin’ flag

DO you feel it was a sell out by the writer to change the lyrics and go commercial with the Coke version? Discuss

Great!

That means our Nigerian best-selling artistes might as well re-record their best-sellers.ie. the ones with those smashing melodies, along with new lyrics. I hope we'll enjoy them thereafter.

P.S: I can imagine what "Fall in Love" melody would sound like if D'Banj rewrote the lyrics to sing a song for Nigeria. LOL!!!

No LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOng thing,

The original version was a call to attention of wars and tribulations in his native land Somalia. As an exiled poet he sought to draw attention to this inhumanity happening in his beloved country through the might of his pen, Coca Cola did notice but opted not to spotlight the hardship of Somalians but rather exploit the commerce angle of the song by changing the lyrical content to reflect their world cup campaign. So while many people know the lyrical content of the revised song it is doubtful if they've ever heard of the original. I think of how many people who would have heard about Somalia through the original version of the song and wonder if it wasn't an opportunity lost in the bid for commercialisation. It's like tweaking the anthem of a nation for commercial gain, just my thought.
