http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art201008193152348 Saliu and another suspect, Saheed Onitolo, who were arrested by policemen in Lagos last week for allegedly using their car as an illegal armoury, said because buyers were always waiting to buy any of these products they were robbers’ favourite. To ascertain the veracity of their claim, Saliu (30) and Onitolo (28) said they had snatched nine different vehicles that fell within the brands this year. Saliu told our correspondent that he and other two members of his gang operated around Egbeda, Akowonjo and Dopemu areas of Lagos State. “We look for a deserted road and I would make my own surveillance to see if the roads are good enough for us to make a quick escape. I also look out for possible get away routes,” he said. According to him, once he was satisfied with the environment, other members would join him and they would conclude their robbery operation. Although Onotolo, who claimed to be an auto technician, is a member of the gang, he said his own line of operation was to drive stolen vehicles to sales point. “I don‘t follow them to rob, I only collect the cars and drive them to where they would be sold. My contact man is Gbenga and once he called me, I would meet them at a spot. I have not been with them for long, I have helped them to drive a Nissan Pathfinder and a Honda ‘end of discussion‘ and a Toyota Camry since I joined them,” he said. Ironically, the police did not arrest the men while on operation. Mba said, ”It was a victim that recognised Alhaji (Salau) and raised the alarm before policemen arrested him. Initial investigation showed that the Alhaji was a member of a gang suspected to have robbed people of their vehicles in Lagos in the past. “Further investigation led us to the arrest of Onitolo and we also intercepted a Honda Bulldog car that was being used as a mobile armoury. Guns were cleverly hidden in the back door pad. “We later recovered from them a vehicle, a military assault rifle, two cut to size double barrel guns, 22 live rounds of 6m bullets and five live cartridges. “This discovery also made us to order another round of investigation into a bus that was abandoned by some young men when police stopped them. We also discovered a lot of gun in the engine compartment.” Mba said police investigation would continue into the activities of Saliu, Onitolo and other gang members. |
