5 Common Mistakes Students Make When Preparing For Exams| No 3 Is The Major by Kingerons: 9:30am On Jan 31, 2019
Do you know that proper preparedness precedes proper progress? Preparing for an important exam can be very stressful and demanding. Most times, students are most likely to falter in their preparation, due to lack of experience or proper guidance. You may be having a couple of examinations coming up like WAEC, JAMB, NECO, GCE, Post UTME or even a scholarship exam. This article focuses on common mistakes students make when preparing for exams.

Knowing these mistakes will help you prepare properly and avoid them because “When you are properly informed, you cannot be deformed”. So analyse each mistake closely and see if it applies to you personally and take necessary steps to overcoming them.

WHAT ARE THE COMMON MISTAKES STUDENTS MAKE WHEN PREPARING FOR EXAMS?

1. NO GOAL.
Have goals

Zig Zalar once said “A GOAL PROPERLY SET IS HALF WAY REACHED”. This is one of the major mistakes students make when preparing for exams and can at times lead to failure. You have to ask yourself questions like “What do I want?” Goals must be set in every area of your preparation for an exam. Know what grades you want to get in each subject or area. Set goals on how many hours you plan spending on a particular subject.

Once you have a target, it becomes easier for you to shoot for it and achieve it.

2. STARTING LATE
you're late!

Another mistake is starting late. Starting preparation for an exam at the last minute can be very lethal. Procrastination is the major cause of this mistake. When you are always pushing your studies aside, it becomes more and more difficult to concentrate and give it your full attention (READ ON How to read and concentrate fully). Start preparing for that exam early. The earlier you start, the better your performance will likely be.

If you have already made this mistake, read my article on how to cram everything few nights to an exam. It will help you to success still.

3. OVER-DEPENDENCE ON TEACHERS, LECTURE HOUSES AND TUTORS
I will not deny it, lecture houses are very helpful. Having tutor and teachers to guide you when preparing for an exam is very great but over-dependence on these people will do you more harm than good. There is a part you must play when preparing for exams. Most students believe all they need to do when preparing for exams is attend classes or lecture houses and then are good to go. WRONG! There is a place for your own study and practice because there are cases where only your deep understanding of a course can help you.

4. NO TIME CONSCIOUSNESS
On an average, exams are not meant to favour you in terms of timing. Most students do not know this. I addressed this matter in my article on improving your exam speed and beating the time. I suggest you read it because it will help you attain speed and accuracy. Very Important!

5. OVER-STRESSING
We are all aware of the fact that you have to study during your exam and this is sometimes stressful. But when this stress begins to take a toll on your health, it can be very detrimental. This alone can make you fall very sick and hinder your preparation for the exams. Pay attention to your body and always try to eat and rest well. You need a healthy body, a healthy mind and a healthy brain. When you have these 3 things, you will be unstoppable.
