Service History.

Hyunda santafe 2008 3.3liter V6

Vehicle is about 2years in Nigeria, oil changes strictly Full synthetic oil 5w20 mobil at intervals always less than 5000miles.

Complains of misfire mid last year, sparkplugs and coils replaced, injectors cleaned.

Intermittent misfires continued but not a daily occurrence, some times weekly some times monthly. Misfires could be solved by restarting vehicle, some times restarting might not solve misfire.

Misfires became more obvious and was brought to workshop for engine tune up and servicing.

Injectors cleaned, spark plugs replaced, engine ran smooth.

Just to be sure I took car out for a spin on third mainland at about 9:30pm monday night engine ran well just at the base of the bridge engine died, attempts to restart were met with stiff resistance. Vehicle towed to workshop.

Engine frozen stiff, engine oil check not metal particles or discoloration from dipstick.

Took engine out of bay.

Engine taken apart

Crown of valve found inside combustion chamber (cylinder2)

Cylinder damage

Bore damage

Piston damage.

What happened? Please Discuss.

Now we know the genesis of the misfire.

I think what would have prevented this would have been to perform a compression test on all cylinders prior to test drive.

What caused the valve failure? Misaligned timing? Valve that had a factory defect from the manufacturing process? Mysteries.

The lambda engine ( 3.3 v6) , although is known for oil consumption due to bad piston rings/ pistons( piston slap), this is quite unusual.

I'm just wondering what caused such mechanical failure in an apparently well maintained engine. Hmmm...

This is typical case of a back fire. This went straight back to the engine hence the occurrence of this. I once dealt with this. Exhaust becomes red as hell fire grin after 6secs of starting the vehicle. This might be an exception but it's a back fire. Pele sir wink

Why the clamour for synthetic oils? If the interior of an engine using Mobil synthetic oils sold by the op is like this?!

Wouldn't that be a case of a blocked exhaust( catalyst)?

Sorry to ask, what colour would the inside of this engine looked like?

Trying to figure out... detonation causing valve to bend and stuck open (hence the misfire)...

there is no sludge in engine. Discoloration is from previous user outside the country.

Na me talk discoloration.

Beside when car manufacturer start recommending light weight engine oil and our market is flooded with heavy weight engine oil, something need to be done to save new cars.

Car Owners need to clamour for light weight engine oil and thanks for the clamouring, we now have light weight engine oil and I believe no one put guns on anybody head to buy oil.

Let us enjoy this movie without distraction. grin grin grin

Interesting dimension. But i think detonation will more likely destroy the pistons heads than the valves due to the material composition of the two (the piston is 'softer'). I think this is more inclined to a factory defect( the valve manufacture). Detonation would imply that either the knock sensors were not working ( unlikely, since car would have been scanned prior to test drive) or a really really crappy fuel was used to run the engine (the engine does not require or recommend premium).

Another thing i noticed was scratched cylinder walls. This means the engine would have been suffering from piston slap.

More pics and info.

Exhaust side of the valve area, no build up of carbon, clearly no sludge buildup.

Question remains, why did valve crown detach from the stem.

P.S if you have nothing constructive to contribute, just relax in politics/romance section.

The intake valve was damaged.

Could there have been a possibility of the engine ingesting a foreign object apart form air?

The valve lock dip may have failed when it opened and remained there then the cylinder head crushed it. Further attempts to restart the engine caused more damage. A timing jump may be in play.
