Elections into the board of the Nigeria Football Federation may be postponed for at least a year, sources have told KickOffNigeria.com.

The elections are scheduled to hold on August 21, but some candidates have called for a postponement to allow States FA elections to hold before the national elections.

Two court cases, one in Ilorin and another in Lagos, have challenged the process, and both have received the backing of the National Sports Commission.

"The government wants the elections postponed and we have two court cases, so the board will meet tomorrow (Thursday) to decide on it," a top source within the NFF board said.

"After that, we will take the matter to the Congress on the 21st and ask them to extend the tenure of the State FAs till March and the board for a year to allow us follow due process."

If the elections had held, it would have been the height of illegality. The State FA's tenure in office have since expired and they were the ones supposed to vote people in. I dont mind us sacrificing a year if it will secure the years ahead

Don't let confusionists mislead you.

There is nothing illegal about the NFF congress extending the tenures of States FA Chairman so as to have a harmonised calendar of elections because the state elections have always been held at different periods and some have not had elections for many years.

FIFA extended the tenure of Iraq FA by 1 year earlier this month and FIFA President's tenure was similarly extended by 1 year some years ago.

It is not compulsory to hold State FA elections before National elections just like it is not compulsory to hold CAF or UEFA elections before FIFA elections.

It is only people who have just smelled the coffee that they were going to lose the elections that are complaining about a decision made 2 years ago.

It's purely illegal bro whichever way you look at it, the people in office when that decision was made are now out of the NFA, so that decision should go too and be abolished, we are talking about a new era in our football, we can't afford to allow old wine to dictate what should be put in a new bottle, nah nah nah, let the state election go on first before anything.

You don't build a house from the top, rather it's from the bottom.

Nothing like Harmonization of calendar, you don't use 2 years to harmonize an election calender, it's a fraudulent and we all know it.

It is not illegal. It followed due process @ the Congress and the statutes were properly amended.

Folem, what is right about extending the tenures of state FA chairmen? When FIFA extended Iraq's FA tenure, it was for a reason. It was because their elections was postponed and FIFA has warned that if their elections are postponed again, they would face a ban.
FIFA extended their tenure so they could go back and put their house in order.
What was the reason given for extending the state FA chairmen tenure if not for the sole reason of re-electing the ousted Lulu and his cohorts

Stop quoting dictionary meaning for here joor, we are talking about building a new NFA, you are talking about the selfish decision taken by a congress made up of criminals which was to protect themselves for the future fraud and crime they're about taking. see as long as we are building a new football head for this country, we should not allow these FAs to be the ones to vote.

Let them first conduct the state election and let the people in each states select their own state FA first before we talk about the NFA membership election.

ALL SET FOR ONDO FA ELECTION (Jan 30,'07)

New board members of the Ondo State Football Association would emerge this morning as the final phase of elections into the boards of local government, zonal and state FA holds at the Akure Sports Stadium.

The elections, which have witnessed high-tension intrigues and horse-trading, have successfully been held at the local government and zonal levels.
Speaking with our correspondent yesterday morning, Chief Leke Olokungboye, a member of the Electoral Committee supervising the elections, assured that the stage is set for a fair and credible election.

We have successfully conducted that of the 18 local governments and that initially had problems, we have settled them. We promised to conduct a free and fair election and we will certainly do that,? Olokungboye told our correspondent in a telephone chat.

Two members of the State Referees Council, Ola Ilesanmi and Dele Ogungbemi are the two aspirants jostling for the Chairmanship seat of the state FA

The Levels Of Authority In Football

I am the elected Chairman of the Ewekoro Local Government Football Council, affiliated to the Ogun State Football Association. From that position I contested and was elected into the board of the Ogun State Football Association that is an affiliate member of the Nigeria Football Association.
The Ewekoro Local Government Football Council, made up of football clubs in the local government area, is empowered by the Local government to function. It is a body completely independent of the Ogun State Football Association but related to it by affiliation only. We register for competitions under the State FA and seek the permission to organise matches and competitions.

Those who vote in the FA do not get voted in on their own, these people do not have to do election before they are qualified to vote in an FA chairman.

That's what i am telling you, these council people don't have to conduct any election themselves because they automatically qualifies to vote for the state FA, or where on the article was it written that the clubs in the states have to conduct election within themselves first before they determine who's eligible to vote for the state FA members?

Maigari leads, Odegbami chances narrow

Posted: 2010-08-23 06:55

Current NFF President Aminu Maigari is in the forefront of the race to retain his position, while Segun Odegbami's chances have slimmed down considerably.

Maigari took over from the impeached Sani Lulu in July, and has gingerly navigated a political minefield during the period.

His handling of the postponement crisis has won him the backing of the majority of the Delegates for Thursday's elections, some of whom told KickOffNigeria.com that he has shown his ability to handle difficult situations.

"For now, he is the one most of the delegates are likely to vote for, unless something happens," one delegate said.

By contrast, the rejection of the postponement petitions by the General Assembly have seriously compromised Odegbami's chances of getting elected.

The former international was at the forefront of the campaign to get the elections postponed to allow State FA elections to hold first.

But the NFF Congress, made up mostly of State FA chairmen, rejected the calls, with majority of them in danger of losing their positions in the event of any such election.

"He wanted us to lose our positions so that new people can come in and vote. How will he now come to us to campaign," said another delegate. "It is better for him to simply step down honourably now, because he may be disgraced."

Former NFA Secretary General Tijani Yusuf, and a past NFF Consultant Shehu Dikko have also emerged as frontrunners behind Maigari.

Try to read the statutes.

Is there really any significant difference between the the way the board of FC's and FA's are constituted?

Only the State's (including F.C.T) FA Chairmen  elected by the state FA congress (with each FC having 2 votes) get to vote @ NFF congress along with 7 others.

Do these people in the states do election first before they determine who's fit enough to vote for those who are competing to be a member of the state FA? undecided

Not all State FA Chairmen tenure have expired.

“There was nothing the ministry did not do to postpone the elections but we did not agree. The minister told us that he thought that the tenure of all the FA chairmen had expired and that he did not know that some people still had six months, some up to one year. He was the one that calmed matters,” one FA chairman and a delegate to the Congress said on phone. Two other delegates confirmed this.

The tenures extended was for harmonization and was done legally.

"Why We Elongate Tenure of State Football Association"

A member of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Congress, Mallam Ibrahim Musa Gusau yesterday explained why some state football association (FAs) executives has been allowed to continue in office after their tenure's expiration.

Gusau, who is the chairman of Zamfara State Football Association, told a news conference in Abuja that the decision, which was taken at last year's Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Federation in Makurdi, was to harmonize all football association elections in the country.

According to Gusau, after the decision in Makurdi, the state football association chiefs went back to their various states and briefed their constituencies who agreed that the decision was in the best interest of the Nigerian football.

He added that the decision was not aimed at favouring anybody, as some state association's executives will not benefit from the new arrangement.

"We as a family have the right to sit and unify what is being done at the national level, and that is exactly what we did at the NFF AGM in Makurdi where we agreed that the tenure of football associations in the country fall within a particular period.

"So, after the 2010 elections, all football association elections in the country together with that of the national body will hold at the same time, unlike what is currently happening.

"You should note that some state football associations' tenures expired in 2009, while others are to expire in 2011, but we agreed during the Makurdi meeting that they should all be harmonized for us to have a uniform calendar of election", Gusau stated.
