Flying Eagles head coach Paul Aigbogun says the team has moved on from Tuesday’s disappointing 0- 0 draw with the Amajita of South Africa in their Group A clash at the 2019 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations and now focused on the next clash against hosts Niger, reports Completesports.com.

Aigbogun’s men were denied an early chanceto secure a place in the last four and book a ticket to the FIFA U -20 World Cup in Poland by their spirited South African opponents who shut them out for the entire duration of the game.

The Flying Eagles had 66% of the ball possession and 13 shots on target, but they found the defence as well as goalkeeper and skipper Kubeka unbeatable.

It was a story of wave after wave of Nigerian attacks against South Africa’s resolute defence.

In the dying minutes, a pile-driver by midfielder Jamil Mohammed from the edge of the box was saved by Kubeka.

And Aigbogun reckons that good discipline inAmajita’s play derailed the Flying Eagles’ ambition of reaching the knockout stages of this continental tournament after two group games.

“We actually came into this encounter hopingfor a win,” Aigbogun told reporters after the game against South Africa.

“However, we played against a very strong side who were very organized in how they approached this match and were consistent in their performance.

“We will take this point and try to do our utmost best in our upcoming group game.

”Nigeria still lead Group A with four points, while Niger and South Africa occupy second and third positions respectively with two points. Burundi are bottom with one point.

The Flying Eagles final group game is against the host nation Niger on Friday, while South Africa will face Burundi.

As Nigeria and Niger prepare for the make-or-break clash in their final game of Group A which could determine their passage through to the semifinals as well as earn one of the tickets for the U20 World Cup in France, both managers are talking tough about the anticipated encounter.

Former Flying Eagles head coach John Obuh has backed coach Paul Aigbogun tolead the current Nigerian U-20 national team to the semifinals of the CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations which guarantees an appearance at the FIFA U-20 World Cupin Poland.

Obuh however stressed that the team must be considered as a conveyor belt for the Super Eagles.

"I really want to believe that Paul (Aigbogun) knows why he had to pick up the job of the U-20 national team because it's a job that prepares the players to graduate to the Super Eagles, so I want him to concentrate on that," Obuh told Channels Television on Thursday night.

"Unfortunately we belong to a country where winning trophies at the age grade categories are important to Nigerians.

"But I think the most important for him to do is build a team that will produce more number of players for the Super Eagles.

"I still want to believe that the team will qualify for the World Cup if only they they remove in their thoughts this issue of hostcountries which don't work in internationalfootball otherwise I would have won the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2009 when we lostto Switzerland.


Obuh said insists that the 'win at all costs' syndrome and huge expectations by Nigerians, and performance levels of the players should not deter the Flying Eagles who face hosts Niger at 4.30pm Nigerian time on Friday.

"What can I say: that is their first test of that level of the game of their careers unlike my U-20 team of 2011 who had their exposures from the U-17 team beforegraduating to the U-20 level," the onetime Enugu Rangers and Wikki Tourists coach concluded.
