Nigeria Spends $700m On Alternative Water Providers, Says World Bank by Nwaforj44: 9:14am On Mar 06, 2019
The World Bank has put the cost of water from alternative providers in Nigeria at $650 to 700 million a year—four times more than the combined revenue of all 35 state water agencies (SWAs).

According to the bank, should the trend continue within the next 10 years, less than a third of the municipal population will get water from SWAs at the cost of $1.5–2 billion a year for just basic water services.

Speaking to newsmen, yesterday in Abuja, United States Agency for International Development (USAID) consultant, Badamasi Abdulsalam, said that the lack of investment coupled with the lack of finances of most state water providers makes Nigeria’s water service unusually inadequate even when compared with much poorer African nations.

“Water consumption is adequate only in the North Central region, though it is close to the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommendation of 50 litres per capita per day (lpcd) in the North East region. In all other regions, consumption is significantly lower than recommended. Low consumption affects providers as well as users. Service below 50 lpcd does not correspond to the design standards for water supply systems—no utility can be sustainable and guarantee safe water when consumption is so low. There are, however, other elements of service that require swift attention and that need to be built into the assessment of investment needs. For instance, water services tend to be intermittent, with only Abuja (in the Federal Capital Territory) and Cross Rivers reporting 24/7 service” he said.

Abdulsalam also said that evolution of Nigeria’s water services has resulted in a situation in which each state has a unique institutional structure for service provision, tariffs and revenues, and principles of cost recovery and investment.

He observed that no water utility can borrow money or be made fully responsible for financial or investment support to water operations.

The reason, he explained, is that such operations are delegated to other state agencies either by State Water Boards (SWBs) or state water ministries.

“There is also no mechanism to transfer federal financial resources directly to SWAs. These limitations on SWA financial initiatives deter investment. The outcome is lack of incentives for water providers to attract new customers.

If you want to survive in this country, don't wait for the government to provide you with basic amenities because you go with tire.
To provide water, we don't wait for the government, we install boreholes in our residences

Fear go let the world Bank say how much Nigerians dey spend for alternative power supply.
The way the UN forced Nigeria to remove the huge tariffs on bore hole pumping machine they should also force Nigerian government to remove the high tariffs on solar panels and inverter batteries wether NEPA no go be like water board

Most Nigerians don't even remember water cooperation exist anymore... It's hard for any Nigerian to pick state water supply as an option in his house... Though i enjoy stable and clean water supply from ogun state government at Akute area its been more than a year now..

Because our government run water supply companies are not allowed to charge meaningful water bills, meaning they are grossly underfunded, and cannot invest in new equipment.

They are suggesting that we spend more on sourcing water for ourselves (boreholes, water tankers etc) besides the one we get from the State Water board. In essence, the State Water agencies are not providing its citizens with the water they need.

In the next 10 years, it estimates that more people would cut off from the little supply of water being dìstributed by the State Water board

Nigeria. A country where you provide everything you need by yourself.

You put burglary bars at home to police yourself.
You sink borehole to become your water corporation.
You buy generator to make you your power holding company.

Boreholes are a time bomb. They have serious environmental consequences - many years down the line by the time of your kids and grandkids. I hope the government starts to do the right thing.

When I lived at Yaba, I had tap water from the public mains. When I lived at Shomolu, the same. Even when I lived at Ajuwon, I had it for a bit. The government should extend this everywhere to stop people sinking boreholes and creating future environmental disasters.

Nigeria is listening and taking advice too readily from these world Agencies. This sort of naivety is part of the reasons for the rise of the miscellaneous banditry ravaging the North East, North West and soon the rest of the nation, which you will all then worsen by not identifying the right causes. Nigerians complain incessantly about Lord Lugard creating Nigeria out of disparate Tribal Nations and yet do not realise that these World Agencies are indirectly replicating the act under your noses. For instance by continually advising, cajoling and emotionally blackmailing Nigeria about the need for Nations around Lake Chad basin to pool-resources in order to combat the 4 horsemen of Climate change: namely, desertification, hunger, water and terrorism, Nigeria has been deceived into becoming all but a State in UN’s (World Organisations) new Federal Republic of the Sahel. The federal Republic of the Sahel is made up of 4 states, Chad, Nigeria, Niger and Cameroon. Nigeria as the plumiest State in the new republic is merely attracting the bandits from the other States.

Nigerians need to take Nationhood seriously. You need to scrutinise and work out the hidden implications of advice given you by the West, get to grips with recording Births and Deaths, keeping records, guarding your borders, investing in security as part of any major infrastructural and super-structural overhauls and so on.

most sensible comment I have seen today.
Actually, all we need is for the government to allow a few companies to come in and build battery factories and solar panel factories in Nigeria to drive down the prices. Walahi, PHCN go chop their light. NNPC go drink their fuel

Basically, water companies need to make a profit so that they can afford much more modern equipment AND afford maintenance costs that would mean no more polluted water or poor water supply.

That is why GSM is working in Nigeria because GSM companies are allowed to charge prices that allow them to make a profit.

Let's be realistic. It is painful, and God knows that high prices affect my pocket, as yours, but all the polluted water is what we get for paying low prices, plus corruption.

Thank you
