Oral electrolyte replenishers may be administered as solutions, powders, tablets or mixtures. For infants and children, that are affected by excessive diarrhoea, vomiting or other types of dehydration, oral rehydration salt (ORS) have been recommended as one of the most effective and cheap therapy.

Oral rehydration salt (ORS) is just a dry mixture of sodium chloride (salt), sodium bicarbonate, potassium chloride and dextrose. Flavouring agents are allowed to be added by pharmacopoeias but sweetening agents are not allowed to be added by both British and United States monographs.
