Help Me Choose Between Honda Accord 03-08 And Honda Pilot 03-06 by uchdollar111: 5:20am On Mar 16, 2019
Good morning house, so I'm a civil servant in a federal government establishment earning around 100k per month and looking to get a car by next month. I like Honda cars so I want to get any of Honda Accord or Pilot. I want to know which is easier and cheaper to maintain and which is more reliable. Please house candid advice needed.

If u don't have a big family, don't have need to carry much roads, don't live in am area with bad terrain, then there's no need to buy a pilot unless u just like it. Of course the maintenance of a pilot is more, it's 4 wheel drive so it has an extra axke for the back wheels which require it's own special fluid change at intervals. Also the fuel economy for the pilot is atrocious because of it's size and all time 4wd (unless u are buying one of the newer model ones). So yes the pilot costs more to maintain than the 08 Accord. But if u like it or have the need to own one then it's s very good car.

Harsh truth: You don't make enough money to own these cars. Buy a Civic. Costs much less to maintain than the Pilot or Accord, and is a great, sporty vehicle.

Go for the 2005 accord! Its the best for your income level and taste. The pilot is too big in cost and mentainance. The 2008 is best but for ur income, I won't advice. I have used accords from 2004, 2007 and 2010 models. The 2005 is best for a start.

U raised a valid point, but since he his considering the Honda pilot, that means he can comfortably affort a first grade Nigeria used EOD of less than 800k. That car with a reliable mechanic behind him, he can manage effectively with that income bracket

Yes, the 05 Accord isn't a terrible option. Much better than the Pilot anyway.

5 yrs with EOD, no ball joint change yet. Go park somewhere.

I suggest you stick to sedans for now.

Stop misinforming the public. Every car has it issues, if you are a meticulous person you don't need to be afraid of maintaining any car brand not withstanding there so called "perceived" issue(s). I own both Honda Accord 2007 and Pilot and the Accord is over 4years with me and I have never had issues with neither of them. Simply because I do listen to my vehicles and give the necessary attention when needed.

Back to OP question,

Pilot: Good for large family, bad roads and long distance travel. Yes fuel consumption is synonymous with other vehicles of Same engine size. You can't expect a 3.5L engine capacity in Pilot to consume same amount of fuel with a Honda Accord 2.4 or 3.0L engine or any other car with lesser engine capacity N13k plus and N9k plus fill my fuel tanks for Pilot and Accord respectively and a full tank can do 485Km journey with some fuel left in the tanks

Accord: If you have a small family and need just a car to commute to work or run around, please go for Accord.

Both vehicles are durable and lovely to drive, just like every other vehicles, maintenance is the key word here. Give them what they want and they will in turn serve you very well

Thanks a lot for your contributions. I've settled for the Honda Accord since I'm still single and live in an area with good terrain. I learnt that Pilot is v6 while Accord is 4 plugs, is it true?

All pilots are 6 cylinders. The 3nd gen (2009-20015) even though has an eco mode still has the same poor mpg as the 1st Gen (16 city 22 highway) But fuel economy improved in the 2016- present model.

What about the Accord and how is the fuel consumption of the Accord?

There are 4 and 6 plugs accords for all years. A few are hybrids too.

Just make sure you check the exhaust pipe. If it’s single then it’s a 4 plugs but double mean it’s one of the rest.

Accords have 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder. For the 08 4 cylinder does 21 city 31 highway while v6 does 19 city 29 highway

Op, due to your financials, for now stay from the sweet 08 accord, except you have priced the gearbox and other components in comparison with 05-07 models.

But apart from the mpg, Is there any other reason to pick i4 over V6 e.g Quartz of oil used in services, number or may catalytic converter, 0w sensors, plugs etc Just for enlightening

The v6 has 3 catalytic converter and 4 o2 sensors vs 1 and 2 for the i4. But the v6 is fully loaded with leather interior, wood trim, 6 CD loader 2 power outlets, etc. If u want an i4 that is fully loaded then get the ex trim.

In addition the v6 has traction stability control(a life saver) unlike the i4 models.
The only downside of v6 is that aside a little more fuel consuming, the parts and mentainace are higher than i4. But the v6 is smoother and full options.

I changed gearbox for 04 model recently, it cost 90k while that of 08+ models cost 3 times more.

Considering your income and problems synonyms with the accord family I would advise the 06 - 07 accord DC with i4 engine. Try to get a clean one with low mileage. Thankk me later

It's normal thing that the parts for later generations are more expensive than earlier generations. It's like that for every cars. If u think the gearbox of 08 Accord is expensive, try the one for 08 Camry v6.

Evil spirit has no gear problems. Its more of engine problem than gear, otherwise the car is stronger that 2003-7 accords. Also its leather seats are a problem. If am buying that car, i will look for EX without leather seats.

Try 08 Camry, and you will thank God for Honda. Have you heard 10 pin vs 13pin gear box, na camry wahala be that.
