being a starter is not the same as being at your peak. You can also be a top 3 player and not be at your peak. A player is at his peak when he's playing at his best.

Messi only peaked in 2009 which incidentally happened to be his first uninterrupted season. For the first time, he scored more than 30 goals all season. He was very injury prone before then.

That said, you can see why it's silly to compare goal Ronaldo's 9 years of peak football in Spain with Messi's full stay in la liga? You either compare their football in the 9 years they were together in Spain or compare their full career stats. Either way, Messi has the better stats and has played better.
