The cholera outbreak in Nigeria has claimed 781 lives from 3,000 reported cases, the Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu, has said.

The minister made the statement in Abuja, on Tuesday, at a media briefing to intimate Nigerians on current trends and intervention strategies mapped out for the epidemic.

Chukwu also said that of the 11 affected states, Katsina State reported the highest number of casualties, with 175 deaths from 310 reported cases.

``Bauchi, Borno, Adamawa, Gombe, Yobe, Taraba, Jigawa, Kaduna are the most affected states after Katsina State,’’ Chukwu said.

The minister said the intervention strategies would include measures to ensure that after this episode, the country would not record any outbreak of cholera that would record such casualties.

He stressed the need for proper disposal of faeces and the need to provide safe water for the people.

Chukwu said that the short-term measures included the procurement of vaccines in the endemic areas, as well as more intravenous fluids for hospitals where cholera patients were being treated.

It's so sad as this outbreak has gone this far and the government of the land did anot rrest the situation at the initial after so many warning, now many lives has be lost. Moreso I think the people in these region plays around with flies a lot because my first experience in the particular area some years back was shocking seen people dinning with flies all around them as if flies are pets this is so awful something serious needs to be done may be government of the state should enforce a mandatory clean up sanitation day that is if stealing and corruption will allow them to do it that remain the big question. In a such flies invested environ like these area it obvious and certain that cholea like disease is just at the door to strike.

Very sad. Hope this will be handled quickly & effectively. Rich men & their families don't get cholera.

With all said already,i think the problem still lies with the people. Simple task of cleaningness would have averted these scandalous situation.Its unbelievable that some houses still see it as no issue having a toilet,thereby defecating randomly anywhere. Am not surprise the north is severely hit though,cus lack of access to clean and portable water has always been a big issue in the not,compare to the south.
Now the problem of poor disaster management is the major hurdle. I only hope they curtail the situation before it toured the whole country.

ok - i hope u didn't have any vaccinations when u were born. i guess we should let all babies born from now on to stop being vaccinated - i guess things like measles, mumps and rubella, TB, meningitis, polio, yellow fever, etc are not real and don't kill babies!!!

i think the reason they are talking about vaccines is cos lets be honest its not like the government are going to start building social housing for the affected people with adequate sanitation, how do u educate people who don't even have a toilet in their home about water hygine
