The National President of Nigeria Cassava Growers Association, Pastor Segun Adewumi has said that Nigeria can generate twice what it generates from oil if it can devote five million hectares out of its 84million hectares to cassava cultivation.

Adewumi who said cassava can actually sustain the nation if done in a mechanised way stated that what Nigeria uses more than three trillion naira to import annually can be derived from cassava.

He explained that cassava derivatives include ethanol which Nigeria import to the tune of #800billion annually adding that the nation uses 1770 metric tonnes of industrial starch at the cost of over N500 billion annually.

Other cassava derivatives include sweetner, glucose syrup and cassava flour which Nigeria uses a lot of money to import.

While saying that over 20 food types can be derived from the crop, Adewumi said that cassava is not a matter of food, but of industry.

He said the normal way to do commercial farming is to cultivate a large expanse of land adding that what the nation is practicing is subsistence farming.

He equally said that there must be adequate tractors in the country to cultivate the land stating that commercial farming can not be done with cutlass and hoes.

According to him, the arrangement of the Federal Government’s Anchor Borrowers Programme has reduced the problem of funding to adding that the only problem is that farmers must have ready market.

He said that cultivation in a commercial way will reduce the cost of production of cassava and make it possible to penetrate the international market.

He called on the people of Ondo state to embrace cassava cultivation since the land is well suited for the crop.

When asked what the plan of the association at the national level is for the state, Adewumi said it is whatever is presented by the association at the state level that is worked on.

He said that the association has always aided states in the past depending on what they presented to it and will continue to do so.
