Ignorance, in Law, is not an excuse.

Any motorist that violates any of the road traffic laws is expected to pay the penalties.

On federal roads in Nigeria, there are specific amounts that are paid as fines for the different traffic offences.

These fines and penalties are administered by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

The FRSC is the agency established with a mandate to reduce vehicular accidents on federal roads, educate motorists and pedestrians on traffic laws, clear any form of vehicular obstructions, etc.

The authority of the FRSC is restricted only to Federal roads and highways. That is, inter-state roads or federal government-built bridges or flyovers.

The FRSC has no statutory mandate, or authority, to operate or carry out its functions on State government constructed roads.

I was once flagged down by these folks...after checking everything in the vehicle to be OK, they said the blue marking on my plate number was faded/illegible. They threatened to impound my car....they finally asked me to apply for a new number plate.

If these consequences were real Nigeria for better. I didn't even know its this cheap, I was once accosted by FRSC over not carrying a fire extinguisher, they said I should settle them 8k. That if the matter reaches the office I will bail myself 20k.

So it was just a 2k offense?

You are right. Road Marshals will be looking like give us the money, why bother going to pay it in a bank - Our Ogas will eat the money. Beating traffic light is just #2K. But if Police catch You, they will threaten You and even extort more than #2K.

Do they have the authority to enforce #20? If yes, how? I ask cause hospitals are not answerable to them. I also feel #29 is too low.

Firstly, is the road safety an income generating agency? I thought the idea was to make our roads safe- well, as usual misplacement of establishment priorities, they should change the name to road safety service and not commission if they want to continue along this trajectory - if they implement all theses fines, all the commercial vehicles, buses taxi's, Keke, and motor cycles would all be off the road
