We live in a competitive age, in which parents are also overly concerned about whether their child is intelligent enough, and what they can do to improve the child’s IQ.

First, it is very important that you don’t obsess over the matter. In fact, according to scientific studies, it is best you let kids be kids and not try to turn them into academic geniuses at too young an age. Scientists advise that learning for children should take place in context; which means for kids, playing and learning should go hand in hand.

Children learn so much through everyday living: reading stories together with their parent or teacher, playing with other kids, doing simple activities and finding fairly consistent patterns in things, in situations, in the home, in the class, at the school and other places.

Having said that, here are ways you can make your child smarter at his/her own pace; which is essentially informal learning through work and play.

Talk and read with your kid

This point should be obvious to adults, but some parents ignore this simple but effective trick in search of some other new, complex and bogus ways to raise smart kids.

Instead of reading a storybook to her, next time try to just read with her. Get your kid involved in the reading. Let her sometimes do the reading and explaining while you do the listening – and vice versa. And at some point, read together too.

Make the reading interactive, especially if she is below 4 years old. Engage her in conversations, whether in the kitchen, at the dinner table, taking the short walk to or from school, or talking about some object of interest along the way.

Experts say all of these can help expand your child’s vocabulary and generally maximise whatever intellectual potential she was born with.

Give him simple, educational and age-appropriate toys

The wide varieties and choices available when you enter a toy store can get exciting and overwhelming at once for both you and your kid. But be careful, some of the toys may not be suited for your kid’s intellectual capacity. In fact, buying some of the toys for him may become counterproductive, overwhelming and frustrating your little one.

So, review a toy well to be sure it is suitable for your child’s capabilities or mental development at that age before getting it off the store shelf. It is only the right, simple, educational and age-appropriate toy that will intrigue and stimulate your child intellectually.

Stimulate your child’s sense of curiosity

Curiosity is a child’s first nature and it’s a good thing to try to stimulate it to help him learn more. How to do that? Provide your child with plenty of opportunities to see and discover new things or life experiences.

Once in a while, go out with him and explore interesting places outside familiar environments, such as taking a simple walk together to the park, taking a trip to the museum, or the beach or even the big city mall or supermarket. He will be visually stimulated.

Every single inspiring place your child goes for the first time is a learning experience and increases his intelligence.
Introduce her to letters and numbers early

You don’t have to wait for your kid to start school before introducing her to numbers and letters. You can start by pointing out numbers and letters on boards and signposts during playtime at home or a leisurely walk together on the street.

The more exposed your child is to numbers and letters, the easier it will be for her to understand and apply the knowledge better when it’s time for formal learning at school.

Provide him opportunities to interact with other kids

Your child does not only enjoy the company of his peers when you allow him to interact with them, but the social meet also provides stimulating experiences for him, and he learns to face challenges and challenges in an intelligent way as he grows up.

Discuss with other parents of his age group you are friends with to arrange play dates with his peers or simply take him out for a walk to the park where he can meet and mingle with other children his age.

One more thing: Make sure to supervise his social interactions, especially if he’s still young. Getting involved this way will allow you to gently guide and support him to make good friends.

Sign her up for a musical lesson or class

Several recent university studies have shown children who study music tend to be smarter as adults. Although there are counterarguments about the role it can play in a child’s mental development, it is generally believed that music does more than just provide rhythm and melody to the ears. It lifts the soul and enlivens imaginations too. Therefore, it can help open up your child’s mind in many amazing ways.

Your child will also learn perseverance along the way, plus other associated mental skills that support learning; consequently, boosting her intelligence.

Teach him to play chess

There have also been a few debates over the years about the cognitive benefits of chess, but a common takeaway from new researches is that parents and schools should give this fun, classic game a try to boost children’s mental development.

Advocates of chess for growing children are convinced it is a powerful brain-building game, and there are some studies that provide links between chess and a person’s problem-solving ability on a broader level.

Let her have sufficient sleep time

It is important that your child gets the proper amount of rest. Paediatricians generally recommend at least eight hours of snooze time every night.

Having sufficient sleep time will keep your kid alert, ready to learn and in a livelier, more positive attitude. Set a bedtime for her and stick to it.

Ensure good nutrition for your kid

Make sure your child has regular, nutritious meals – not junk food. Children who are often fed junk food are prone to illness. They are also usually deficient in proper nutrients like iron, which is vital for healthy brain tissue growth.

Good video games

On a general note, you should limit your child’s screen time and be cautious with video games. However, some video games are built with so much thought and can help your child boost his IQ.

A good video game for your kid will promote strategic thinking, creativity and probably the concept of teamwork. It will help your kid develop his or her motor skills and memory.
