HIV is a virus which can be transmitted through contact with the blood or fluid of an infected person and the most common means of transmission is through unprotected sexual intercourse with the infected person. The virus fights the immune system which is our body's natural defence against diseases or infections. The virus can be found in semen, vagina and anal fluid, breast milk and in blood. Note that the virus can't be transmitted through saliva, urine or sweat.


Pregnant women infected with the virus are most likely to pass it on to their babies in the womb, during child birth or during breastfeeding. Early detection and immediate follow up with treatment can reduce the risk of the transmission.
